    3. Hello Ursula: Thanks for letting me know the correct way to tell you about my ancestors who immigrated to Canada. My Grandfather whose name was FRANZ TITZE was born on November 9, 1870 in Waldhof, Germany. When he grew up he worked in a knitting mill in Kassel as a weaver. In going back to his ancestors, they were at one time named TITZE WEBER. (WEBER meaning "weaver". ) He married and his wife's name was MARIE (she was my grandmother ) She was born in Minden on April 29,1872.I don't know her maiden name, it could have been SCHULTZ. They immigrated to Canada in the early months of 1911 from BREMEN on a ship called the MANFORD. Their 5 children immigrated with them, namely my father ARTHUR ERICH TITZE, born Feb 19, 1899 in KASSEL, also 3 more sons, ALFRED, CARL AND GEORGE and one daughter MARTHA. They landed in St. John, New Brunswick and travelled by train to Northwestern Ontario, where they took up a homestead. My mother MARTHA OLGA DELLNER was born on March 28, 1901 in Dresden, Germany. After corresponding with my father, ARTHUR ERICH TITZE for some time, he invited her to Canada to become his bride. All I know is that she arrived sometime in August 1924, I do not know on which ship, or where she landed. The DELLER name was originally know as DELLNER GENNANDT SUSSEMILCH, but was later changed to just DELLNER. They were married in October 1924. As a note of interest, once my grandparents were settled in a make shift log cabin, my grandfather wrote back to his relatives in Germany, telling them how much they enjoyed the country here, but the living was hard. Apparently the relatives kept these letters for many years, and about 20 years ago, another relative went to visit Germany and found these letters in a bombed out home of one of his relatives. That is where most of my information has come from. If you need any further clarification, please let me know. Thank you so much Dorothy Ward

    3. Hi All; Re Anglicization/Americanization of Germanic names: I can't speak to all cases, but one letter change which repeatedly cropped up during my research on the genealogy of a potter from Strasburg, Virginia was B to P and vice-versa. Thus the names, Burki, Burgi and Burkenbuehl all devolved to Pirkey (also Perkey, Perky, Purkey and Purky); Bentz devolved to Pence, and Pantzer to Bender. Also, in researching my own family, the surname Jaacks was misinterpreted as Gaaks. I'm sure there are many more examples among our membership. Cheers, Masugu

    3. I am seeking immigration records for August Laurenz/Lorenz and his family who immigrated to the United States in 1893 or 1894. I have been told that they arrived through Ellis Island. It is my understanding all those records were destroyed in a fire sometime after 1900. I am hoping to locate the German Port of their departure and the ship they traveled on. I am really interested in learning more about Regina POMMORIN. We know her birth date is March of 1854 and that she was Polish. We also know that she had a son Adolph Pommorin who was born in Ober, East Prussia. He immigrated to the US on Nov 14th, 1898. The ship was the Pretoria from Hamburg, Germany to port of NY. From the ships manifest I learned that his birth date was Feb. 1874. His last residence was Tattein. Ancestry.com has this information but nothing on August Laurenz/Lorenz and family immigration. 3. Hello Dorothy, With the information you have given us there is little chance of finding any of the persons you have mentioned in your email. Tips for writing an effective query: 1. Enter the SURNAME you are researching in the SUBJECT line ["Ancestors" is too general]. 2. Provide as much information of the person as possible: 2a First Name, Surname, date of birth, and any other data e.g. immigration date, country of origin etc. ["my grandfather TITZE" is not enough, please give us his first name]. 3. Depending on whether you are searching your ancestors in the US or Canada, your grandmother at this point is only of interest if she immigrated. If she remained in Germany, you will have to search for her in Germany. 4. You wrote "My mother Martha DELLNER immigrated to Canada 'around' 1924 to marry my father". I am presently searching for both my grandparents who immigrated from Germany to Canada. My grandfather ((TITZE) immigrated in the year 1911 or 1912 from Bremen. His home had been in KASSEL.The ship he sailed on was called the "Manford" or "Mantfort" He and his wife,Marie, had 5 children who came with them. I have also been trying to find my maternal grandparents. The grandmother was born in Halberstadt and later lived in Dresden. Her name was MINNA VON RIETHAUSEN born around 1864. She married a PAUL DELLNER GENANDT SUSSEMILCH, but the name was later shortened to DELLNER. My mother MARTHA DELLNER immigrated to Canada around 1924 to marry my father, who along with his parents had taken up a homestead in northwestern Ontario. All the websites I have searched have come up blank. I think it could be possible that some of the records may have been destroyed in the second world war, either that or they immigrated under assummed names. If anyone has come across these names, I would appreciate it if your would let me know. 3. In the late 1800's and early 1900's Bavaria had a number of offices that were for the sole purpose of helping the German/Bavarian people to emigrate to the United States. One of the major centers was in Aschaffenburg. They recently had (last year) an event celebrating this "Good Bye Bayern Grüß America". I believe this might be a place to start. Würzburg is only a short distance away. 3. All I can say on the pronounciations is that our Maleschefsky definitely sounded like "Malashefski". 3. Ooops!! I forgot my father's mother's side........Her mother's name was Maria HUEBNER, from "Verbelin, Prussia", and her father's name was August SCHMULT, from "Strebelin, Prussia" according to their marriage record from St. Boniface Catholic Church in Detroit in 1881. They both say they arrived in the US in 1881. I don't know if they met on board ship or lived near each other in the old country. I haven't found their immigration yet either. Maria's brother Adolph immigrated later, but his records that I've found only indicate "Prussia". 3. Hi Manaia, Regarding the name change from Maleschefsky to Mahl.......my Gr-gr-Grandfather never changed it. My Gr-Grandfather is the one who did and he seemed to use whichever name struck his fancy at the moment. He married using Mahl, but when my father was born and when he was baptized it was again Maleschefsky, and then when my father's sister was born it was again Mahl. My father had his name legally changed to Mahl in the 1940s. I don't know a lot about this side of my family. My father died when I was only 8 and my mother didn't keep in touch with his family afterward. 3. Hello Everyone! I've been asked to post an intro, so here goes: My name is Elaine and I've been working on my and my husband's family history since 1983. Some of our lines are Irish Canadian, some are French Canadian, one line is from White Russia (now Belarus), some are "American" thru and thru going back to the 1700s, and the rest are German, Prussian and Polish. One German line came to the US in the 1700s...LOUGHMILLER, which eventually became MILLER. I'm also working on MEYERS/MEYER...they immigrated in 1849 from Prussia, but I don't know where. Another surname I'm searching is YHALKEE. On one gravestone it's spelled Ya-Chalke. They also claim to be from Prussia and were in the US by 1856. It's a very unusual name and I would love to be able to determine the area of origin. Then there's my Maleschefsky's who claim to be from Berlin. They were also Catholic. I don't know if that would narrow down the part of Berlin or not. My Grandmother on my mother's side's surname was HINC (pronounced Hintz). She was Polish but when she immigrated in 1903, there was no Poland and I've always been told she came from the "German side of Poland". On the ship's manifest she gives her point of origin as "Wichnlec, Wp." She sailed from Bremen on the S.S. Neckar. I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan but 4 yrs ago when my husband retired we moved to near Branson, Missouri. He's not completely retired yet, but recently lost his job. Hopefully he'll find something soon. Ok, I think I've gone on long enough. If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Regards, Elaine O'Neill

    3. Hello Elaine: Apologies goes out to you, your families, and to anyone if I have offended - it is *not* intentional. I should have taken my query to another list/board because of the nature of what this one is/does. Topic: A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in passenger lists for ships from Germany. The list supplements the database contained on the Saxony Roots Passenger Lists website. Therefore, I will take my curiosity elsewhere... Thanks!
