Hello to those who are better informed about the civil war than me: I have the records of a Civil War soldier from Michigan who enlisted at age 22 as a Seargeant - so it says on the online records. Can anyone tell me what qualifications he had to have in order to enlist as a Sergeant? I'm sure he didn't just show up and say, hey I want to enlist as a Sergeant. Looking forward to your answer. 3. Hi Bob; If you're searching for Americanizations of the name Kaes, you might want to try homonyms such as Case, Kase, Cass, Keys, etc. Although some folks went for direct translations of their surnames, such as Carpenter for Zimmerman, or Miller for Mueller, it's less likely with a name like Kaes. I'm including some variants from Ancestry's immigration list. Hopefully one of them will work for you. 3. Susan – You may have already seen my replies to others on this list who have sent me much the same information. Unfortunately, the Christina listed is not my gg-grandmother, so I’m still looking. I thought I had hit pay dirt since they were both of the same age and I couldn’t get on the Ancestry.com site to check on date of arrival. However, the listed Christina was of a different family and arrived in this country at least two years after my Christina did. So, I‘ll keep on looking but I’m indebted to all of you who took the time to look up this Christina and send me the information. The Heitzmans listed may be related in some way to my Heitzmans because mine, also, came from the Wurttemburg area, only mine arrived several years earlier. It was the fact that Christina was from Wittlensweiler and was of the same age as my ancestor that gave me hope that I had at last found how and when they arrived. Maybe I’ll have better luck next time. Again, thank you for your help. 3. Hi Bill, I think this is what you need: Microfilm M255_2 pg 1 Ship - Barque Johanna, Master - ?Linder Nensing? or could be Vensing, but looks like an 'N' Aug 6 1838, from Bremen to Baltimore. Last residence for all was Wittlonsweiter. 1- Conrad Heitzman Farmer Destination Hamilton 61 yrs 2- Johann " Weaver " 35 3- Christina " " 22 4- Sophia " " 14 5- Martin " Farmer " 18 6- Anna Maria " 10 I have spent a few minutes trying to locate Mathias on the passenger lists and even the 1850 census where one does turn up in PA as a clockmaker, age would work but wife's name was not Christina. I am wondering if the Martin listed above is not your man, maybe he changed his name. I will be out of town tomorrow but will be happy to check further if you have other information. There is a Mathias Heitzman that ends up in Iowa, but dates don't seem to work. Susan Eppich in northern Indiana, with lots of elusive PA ancestors and a German/TN 2nd g grandfather by name of Heydemann that is especially elusive, hence my interest in your name. ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Richards" <wlrich@adelphia.net> To: <germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 16, 2006 6:15 PM Subject: [G-P-L] Christina HEITZMAN in 1820-1852 Baltimore Passenger Lists I have attempted to look at the “free” Ancestry.com Immigrant Passenger Lists but have not been able to “register”. 1. Re: [G-P-L] Christina HEITZMAN

    3. Sandy – A number of people have been good enough to send me the full record of the Christina Heitzman I found in the “free” Ancestry.com offer. Unfortunately, although the same age as my gg-grandmother, she was not my ancestor. It’s too bad because there seems to be a wealth of information about her and her family. Well, I guess that’s not actually the situation in my case. I have a great deal of info about my great-great ancestors – I just don’t know exactly when or how they got here to the States. As far as I know, Christina and Mathias were married when they came to this country. They arrived about 1835 because their first child, my g-grandfather, was born in 1836 in Baltimore. Since they lived in Baltimore and, as far as I know, had no relatives living in this country prior to their arrival, I’m assuming that Baltimore was their most likely port of entry but, of course, they may have arrived via another port. As for Matthias, my gg-grandfather, he was born in 1810 and came here from Wurttemburg, Germany. I even have a copy of the letter the burghermeisters gave him attesting to his good character. The spelling of the last name varies among the various records thusly: HEITZMAN, HEITZMANN, HEIZMAN, HEIZMANN. There are other variations and misspellings, such as an S instead of a Z, too. Also, MATTHIAS is often spelled as MATHIAS, or, in one church record, as MARTIN and, then, later as MATTHEW. So, Lord knows how their names were spelled on the ship’s passenger list. Anyway, I want to thank you for your quick response. I thought the “hit” on Christina was finally the one I was looking for. Looks like I’ll have to keep looking, but you’ve given me renewed hope. Again, thanks. Bill Richards

    3. Bill, I have a subscription to Ancestry.com and looked for a Christina Heitzman and a Mathias Heitzman and found a 1900 census record that shows them living in Port Jarvis, Orange, New York. However, her birth year is listed as 1838, from Wurttemberg. He immigrated in 1852 and she in 1854. Is this the Christina that you are looking for? Am willing to do further research, if you want. Did find a Christina Heitzman, born abt 1816, but haven't been able to connect her with a Mathias. Maybe you could supply a little more information. 3. Hello Robert, Where did your KAES ancestors settle? Did they settle in Tilden, Polk Co., Minnesota around 1883? You wrote that Josef KAES' father and grandfather were also named Josef. Did they come to the US as well? Can you elaborate a bit more? Ursula from Michigan [as is well again with my email -- bring it on]

    3. Yes, it's going to everyone. Like I said, if you want off the list, go to the bottom of any one of the messages and follow the instructions to unsubscribe. And there's no need to forward everything you get. We're already getting the originals. Just delete them. 3. Hello everybody, my name is Ilya. Although I do genealogical research for almost 50 years and published a book about it, this group is new to me. I've heard about it just recently and decided to join in hope to find answer to my question: when did ancestors of my grandchildren emigrate from Pfalz. According to the records from the Bistumsarchiv Speyer, the RIESER family lived in the village of Waldsee, Pfalz (now Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis district ), in the 18th century. Johann Valentin RIESER was born in 1782, married Eva Theresia Claus in 1810. From 1811 through 1835, they had 17 children. Researching in the USA, I found most of the members of this family in Missouri in the mid and late 1840s. However, I was unable to find when and how did these people emigrate from Pfalz and when and where did they enter the US. Searching New Orleans and other ports revealed dozens of RIESERs, but none of them "mine". I searched your web page to no avail. I will appreciate your expert advice and suggestions on what can I do to find emigration records for this family. Ilya Zeldes Fort Myers, Florida
