    2. Where did your Joseph live, or where did he enlist? I just looked in IL - there were 7, all pvt's. Betty FL Reading other's query regarding Civil War rank of ancestor. My Joseph Keller immigrated from Switzerland via Germany, I believe. He show up in Memphis, TN in 1845 at 25 years of age. I know there was one other man by that name in Memphis at that same time, but rosters for Confederate Civil War soldiers shows 6 men by that name. Most were shown as Private, but one is shown as a Captain. Since my Joseph Keller was educated, and since he came from Switzerland where all young men had to go through military training, do you think he might have been a captain? I sent for one of the records for a private and got no information to speak of - no age, no dates of enlistment etc. - just that he was sick. Could these six men actually be only one or two that were moved from one regiment to another as the war progressed and units were decimated? Also, my Joseph Keller died in 1864, but I cannot find any record of that in Tennessee. Any suggestions?

    2. If he had a wife, and you know her name, you might find her in the pension indexes, I think to be found at Ancestry.com. A widow often filed for pension. If you don't belong, most public libraries carry it, but you have to go to the actual library to view. Otherwise, you have to order the right Civil War records to get possible family information. When I ordered there were two separate sets to pick from - Compiled Service Records - Pension Records. It was the Pension Records that was the goldmine with letters from friends and family, marriage certificates, names and births of children, etc. Susan In a message dated 11/18/06 5:53:07 PM, ewicke@gvec.net writes: > Reading other's query regarding Civil War rank of ancestor.  My Joseph > Keller immigrated from Switzerland via Germany, I believe.  He show up > in Memphis, TN in 1845 at 25 years of age.  I know there was one other > man by that name in Memphis at that same time, but rosters for > Confederate Civil War soldiers shows 6 men by that name.  Most were > shown as Private, but one is shown as a Captain.  Since my Joseph Keller > was educated, and since he came from Switzerland where all young men had > to go through military training, do you think he might have been a > captain?  I sent for one of the records for a private and got no > information to speak of - no age, no dates of enlistment etc.  - just > that he was sick.  Could these six men actually be only one or two that > were moved from one regiment to another as the war progressed and units > were decimated?  Also, my Joseph Keller died in 1864, but I cannot find > any record of that in Tennessee.  Any suggestions? > >

    2. Rosemary McKenzie
    3. Hello everyone, My name is Rosemary McKenzie. I live in Canberra, ACT, Australia. I've been researching my ancestory since I was a teenager. Unfortunately my german ancestor has been a brick wall for me. Fortunately I have had many other lines to keep me busy. The only details I have of my german ancestor is from his marriage certificate in 1880: Edward WEBER (aged 28) - also spelled WABER on some children's birth certificates Married: 3 Nov 1880 Brisbane Queensland Australia Parents: Charles WABA and Caroline LUDWIG Born: Hamburg Germany Family story says he came to Australia by himself and his family didn't come to Australia before or after. Around when my grandfather was born in 1892 (youngest of 6 children) Edward went to the Western Australian goldfields. He communicated with his family for a short while and then stopped. The death certificate (1909 Western Australia) that I believe is his, has no useful additional infomation as it was filled in by a government official who didn't know him. I have been unable to determine when he came to Australia. Rosemary.

    3. My husband's Great-Grandfather sailed on this same ship, also from Liverpool to Philadelphia in 1907. He was from "White Russia", which today is Belarus, but on the manifest is just Russia. His wife and children followed two months later on the S. S. Friesland. I'm really curious on how they made their way from Russia all the way to Liverpool, and why, instead of sailing from Bremen or Hamburg. Thanks for all the information on this ship. Elaine O'. The site tells me I’m already “registered” (probably from an earlier attempt to use a “free” offer) but Ancestry.com will not send me the info I need to re-register. Anyway, on the Baltimore Passenger Lists, 1820-1852, shown in the “teaser”, I found Christina Heitzman, b. abt 1816, origin Wittlensweiler, departed Bremen. Her husband, Mathias Heitzman (Heitzmann) was not listed on the little bit I saw. However, when I attempted to get more info on Christina, that’s when I ran into the registering problem mentioned above. I’m hoping someone who has access to Ancestry.com can look up Christina HEITZMAN for me and give me the information that I could not access. If you can find her husband, Mathias, too, that would be a tremendous bonus. I’ve been trying for years, literally, to find that information and this is the closest I’ve come. If you can help, I would greatly appreciate it. Bill Richards If you see on the lists a George B Bauer, he is the one I am seeking. Does your lists show the ship? The ship I seek may be the Columbia. 1. Re: [G-P-L] Civil War question
    2. Thanks Bill. Of all the responses, this one seems to make the most sense. I too had thought he might have served in the militia just prior to the outbreak of the civil war, but at age 22 in 1862, it is very unlikely that he had faught in any war previously. Strangely enough, his family also migrated to Michigan from Albany, New York. His name was William V. Stewart; he served in the 5th Michigan Cavalry/Company E.. He was taken prisoner in 1863 and died in Andersonville Prison, GA in 1864.
