    2. You bring out a very good point and because you did,I need help--I saw years ago that my father in law made out two D & Is,the second one in Chicago. The first one I'm thinking he made out in NJ after he was married or in NYC before.Whom do I write to to find out for sure? The second question is-On his D& I he states that he married Anna Terry however, I cannot find this name anywhere-I cannot even find her siblingsHe(my brother in law)thins it is something like this.I cannot think of what he said- but it began with Ter.I have the feeling that the given name is not even correct. She was born in 1893 and came to US in 1907-08 in Pogost,Russia. Can you help? I'm at my wits end on this one. I will appreciate any help I can get.

    3. I've been to the NJ State Archives, and they do indeed have naturalizations from many NJ counties. Here is the direct link to the archive's search services and fees: http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/reference.html#collections The list of naturalizations only includes a few counties, but I did find naturalizations for Passaic County (not on the list) at the archives, so I have to think that the list is out of date. I've searched for a number of naturalizations and each State Archive told me to go to NARA, or a County or District Court. Well, guess I'd start with the State Archives if I were you, depending on the source sending you there. This link tells about acquiring the papers in NJ: http://newark.rutgers.edu/~natalieb/gen.htm#imm scan down to immigration then the next section is naturalization. New Jersey State Archives: http://www.njarchives.org/links/archives.html I'd just write to them, tell them what you are looking for and ask what they charge. What can you lose? 3. Susan, I wrote to Mercer County, NJ, asking about the naturalization records and here is a part of their reply: "Please be advised that you may obtain Naturalization records from 1898 at the NJ State Archives located at 225 W State St in Trenton or by calling them at 609-292-6265." Perhaps this will help someone else! The census records say he and his wife and first son were naturalized in 1898. Do you know if there any cost to obtain these records? Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: <NOSHOWCLC@aol.com> To: <germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 01, 2006 9:43 PM Subject: Re: [G-P-L] New Lister here! ;) Jan, Have you tried obtaining his naturalization records from the nearest regional site of NARA? I had no idea when a grandfather came in, only knew his birth date and where he lived in the states all his life (Boston). I emailed the nearest NARA office and they found his naturalization papers and included his certificate of arrival, which also showed the original spelling of his name, date of arrival, ship and port. I'm told sometimes you have to ask for that certificate of arrival, although it was included in all his paperwork. I couldn't find your Henry in Ellis Island or Castle Garden, but looks like from the census he naturalized in 1899, that info would help NARA find his file, and could indicate that he had come at least two years before, then being eligible to file a declaration of intent. He had to live her five years in total, including those first two, before petitioning for naturalization. I'm not sure whether the 1899 date is when he began the process or when it was finished. You can read how naturalizations were obtained at http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/naturalization/naturalization.html If NARA doesn't have him, his nearest County Court, State Supreme Court or Federal Court would hold the records. It takes some tracking down and I don't know how much you'll get from that early date. Now that I think about it, our grandfather came in 1913, after the 1906 date when a lot more is included. Still, if you can't find a manifest, it's the next best thing to creating a span of time when he might have arrived. Hope this helped. As you can see, the 1920 says he immigrated in 1883; the 1900 says 1891 and the 1910 says 1892. BTW, if anyone needs census records, I have access to Heritage Quest. 3. Hi, all, I'm new to the list. I am sooo frustrated! I cannot find a record for the first time someone arrived in the US. Henry C. Sailliez, b. 07 Feb 1859, Belgium, m. in Germany. Had first child in Germany. Is in New Jersey in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses. The census info shows he immigrated in either 1883, 1891 or 1892. I have exhausted all ways I know to locate an immigration record. I have found his wife and both children (one born in NJ) arriving in NY aboard the Kensington in Sept., 1899, but that is the only record I can find. Anyone have any ideas? 3. Hi Bev, Have now looked again at the web site you sent me and have managed to find Johann's parents. His father's name is Klaus and his grandfather Hinrich. On Johann's marriage cert. he puts his father down as Henry, do you think it's possible he could have misunderstood and put his grandfather's name down instead of his father's? I do so want to believe that this is the Johann I have been looking for! Underneath his name it says "Konfession. Ev. Getauft in Worpswede". All the BLANKINGs in the UK stem from one person, namely Johann Heinrich BLANKEN who arrived in London on the 2nd September 1836 age about 18. I understand he came over from Hamburg on the ship “Columbine”, a sugar baker from Hannover. Somewhere along the line it appears he could have lived in Kirchtimke but I am not certain. On his marriage certificate (to Sarah Jenner) in London he names his father as Henry, a farmer, presumably still living in Germany if alive. I would like to know how long it would have taken to travel from Hamburg to London in those days; what would the conditions be like on the ship, etc. etc. and also if he did come from Kirchtimke.
