    3. EWERT family:    They came to Cleveland from somewhere in Germany (we think Prussia).       Parents: August EWERT (b Dec 1839 or 23 Feb 1840) wife: Wilhelmine [SIESS or SU^TY?](b 12 Mar 1847) arrived together 1899       Children: Julius EWERT ---> EVERETT (b 24 Feb 1867) m 1891 in Cleveland, Wilhelmina [~ 25 versions of her surname in the records ranging from BART to OBAROWSKY](b 13 Oct 1874) Julius arrived 1891; Wilhelmina's arrival?    August-2 EWERT ---> EVERT (b Aug 1867 or 25 Feb 1869) m Bertha PAPKE (b~Dec 1877) after arrival August-2 arrived 1892; Bertha?    The following children came together to Cleveland with parents August & Wilhelmine in 1899:       Elisabeth EWERT (REINHOLZ SCHRO^DER/SCHROEDER) (b 5 May 1872) husband: Gottfried/Frederick SCHROEDER (b 6 Oct 1872)         Children:    Herman REINHOLZ (b~1894)    Julius REINHOLZ (b~1896)    Paul SCHROEDER (b~1898)    Otto August SCHROEDER (b 26 Sep 1899)       Auguste EWERT (GRUNSCHALSKI MAHDAL) (b 24 Aug 1877 or 24 Aug 1880) husband: Wilhelm/William GRUNSCHALSKI (b Jun 1875) [this name has been difficult to research as it's spelled in multiple ways - this spelling is on the headstone of a small son that died in 1912]    Child: Anna (b Jul 1899) GRUNSCHALSKI (b Jul 1899)    Herman EWERT ---> EVERT (b 29 Mar 1883) single    Fritz/Fred EWERT ---> EVERT ---> EVERETT (b 29 Mar 1883) single    Although the passenger manifests say that all could read and write, I have my doubts. The family seemed not to keep records, or record information, or, at worst, they had short-term memory problems! Examples: the surnames of the two Wilhelmines are recorded in various ways and family birth dates frequently don't match up on earlier documents with the death certificates.    Thanks, Julia

    2. The Wulfmans
    3. Listers might profit everyone if they start out by identifying names which are fairly unique. That can be accomplished by first going to _http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/en/Default.aspx _ Geogen allows one to determine locations where a name is found as well as relative population, of e.g. Wulfmann (1), and Ankesheil ( 0) , Wleke (0) Wilke (8799) Hoffmann (73458) Schnitker (413). All of these are related but only Wulfmann and Schnitker are somewhat manageable: " *Summary Schnitker* I found 413 entries and localized them in 93 different counties. There are around 1096 people with this name projected on total population. This is an /average occurance/. Relative Distribution for schnitker <http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/en/MapGateway.aspx?name=schnitker&target=DE&renderer=EN_US&mode=rel> Considering the population density the most schnitkers can be found in /Landkreis Oldenburg (NI)/, namely 177 phonebook entries per million people. The fewest live in Kreisfreie Stadt Hamburg. Absolute Map for schnitker <http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/en/MapGateway.aspx?name=schnitker&target=DE&renderer=EN_US&mode=abs> Most schnitkers can be found in /Landkreis Gütersloh (NW)/, there are exactly 55 phonebook entries listed. The fewest live in Alb-Donau-Kreis (1). (Please note: urban agglomerations can influence this visualization) If you go to a map of Germany you will see that we have a concentration of these names along the Wiehengebirge. Some in the area known as Osnabruekerland. Before doing searches it helps to have some useful references such as the Michelin Red Guide, Deutschland and a good road atlas for Germany. In the above example the unique name allowed a useful entry into church books and established not only the relationships but next to the confirmation records of 2 children (September1848) that the families emigrated that month. . At that time the name was Wulf but the only Wulfmann lives within 2 km of where the Wulf family resided and his ancestors were also, Wulf. .. Happy hunting. 3. Mine came to a place called Norsewood in New Zealand and they had to knock down what was known as the "90 mile bush". Then they got started on homesteads etc. Another town where I grew up was called Dannevirke, are you getting the picture, these are Danish names and we were always told we were Danes and needed to be tough, what a laugh. 3.     Hi Judy, I just added my surnames to the list because I did not know of a "data base" that I could go direct to. I belong to over 30 sites where a "surname" list comes up so others can see if they can help. Am I not mistaken but don't we have a database where all names are listed? I filled out the forms. If anyone has a surname just key it in. Why are we doing individual names like this? 3. Dear listers, Lists of names by themselves are really not that helpful, because many names show up in different parts of the German Empire simultaneously. It would be much more helpful and [I think] interesting if you can provide some identifying information, associated places, time periods etc, for each ancestor. Besides the information you know about the ancestor you could tell about your research goals, such as ' I want to find out- - where in Germany he came from - where the records for this birthplace "XXXX" are - what it was like to live in 'XXXX" in the 19th Century etc... Who knows, somebody may have some ideas on resources you could use, plus - it's amazing what you can learn from helping someone else solve a problem. Here I can speak from experience.
