Hi, I have checked theshiplist.com and the immigrants transcriber guild for the Zeeland with the below arrival date with no luck. Can someone please tell me if they have a web site that shows a picture of the Zeeland from 1882 and background info on this ship. Per CastleGarden.org, the Zeeland departed Antwerp, Belgium arriving in New York on 5 December 1882 with my great grandfather on it. His name appears as "Johan Stroebke". The correct spelling of his first and last name should be "Johann Strobele" before the Americanization of his name. After it was Americanized, the correct spelling of his name was "John Stroebele" Thanks very much,
Go to http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/en/Default.aspx. Search Ginther and Stoess. Find where these names appear in the suspect area. Go search telephone book for addresses and send some letters. Do a search of suspect town names and you may find web sites to which you can address questions. Parts of Wurttemberg and Palatinate at times were controlled by Bavaria. Chances are you have unknown relatives in Germany but they could be in modern day Bavaria, Wuttemberg or Rhinpfalz. I am searching for grandparents several generations back. Peter Ginther was born about 1700-1720 in Palatine, Wurttemberg, area of Germany. His wife is Susanna Ros Stoes, also born in the same area. My information comes from a book written by Jennie Stewart. They emigrated to the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area and died there, he in 1742 and no for sure date on her death. Their only child I know about is Peter Ginther who was born 17 Jan 1740 and wed Maria Catherina Williams on 29 June 1762. After Maria died he married Elizabeth Swartz and they 5 had children. Maria died in Lebanon, PA. Peter and Elizabeth died in Gnadenhutten, Ohio area. My other German ancestor is Henry Graves who with is wife, Ann, emigrated to Wisconsin. He was born about 1835 in Hamburg and she gives her birthplaces as Bremen. My husband and I are sort of retired ranchers in the high desert of Eastern Oregon. Parents of 3 sons, and grandparents of 6. I have been doing family history for years. But, have hit a road block on my German ancestors. We are planning a trip to Germany in June 2009 with one son and his children. My husband will revisit where he was stationed when he was in the Army. I want to see where my ancestors came from and Wurttemberg is a very large area! We have friends who are German with whom we will be staying. Dave, have you tried the "Passport Applications" on ancestry.com? It often gives the date and name of the ship on which immigrants, returned to Germany. After 1920, it also shows a passport photo but it's always on the next page. Of course this only holds true if your immigrants ancestors had been naturalized, otherwise they'd travel on their old German passport. ancestry.com uses the info that you put in when you search for someone and uses it as fact. The names I was searching for came up later as fact and I know no one but me put them down-it was my info.on my Maier-Mier and Mueller- Scheckler (Dorthee-Dorthea). On my Pepper line, I put my line (plus) in and when the lines were complete they closed it and at one time-had to pay extra. I'm all for sharing but not when it is for sale. I have never heard of U.S. outbound passenger lists available, so I checked the National Archives website, just to be sure. [ http://www.archives.gov/forms/pdf/natf-81.pdf] THis is what it says there: "WHAT WE HAVE: The National Archives has inbound Federal ship passenger arrival records dating back to 1820 for most east coast and gulf coast ports and a few lists dating back to 1800 for Philadelphia. Ship passenger lists in our custody are not complete. Fire, dampness, or other causes destroyed many records in the 19th century before the creating agencies transferred them to the National Archives. During the 19th century, no law required passenger arrival records to be kept for persons entering the United States by land from Canada or Mexico. No law required the keeping of outbound passenger lists. You should be able to find these people in INCOMING passenger lists upon their return from Germany. Good luck! Does someone have a web site link to send me that will show me outbound ships that arrived in Antwerp, Havre, Bremen, and Hamburg? Looking for relatives that may have visited Germany again after they emigrated. List for both Castle Garden (I know what the web address is) as well as Ellis Island (know that one too) Many thanks, Dave
And here are some dos and don'ts when uploading your family tree for the world to see: Firstly, don't upload your family tree when someone else has already done so. I have noticed that at times there are 3 to 4 submitters, each of them has the same relative but some have submitted trees containing many errors. Secondly, don't provide a long list of "private" for living persons; Living persons should never be included anyway! But there is nothing more aggravating than looking at a long list of "private". Thirdly, don't list married women by their married name; if you don't know their maiden name, leave it blank. Fourthly, please check the correct spelling of German place names. This can be easily accomplished through Google. If you can't find the place on a map, then you can be sure that it doesn't exist. Do some research to determine the place where your ancestors came from. Some of the mistakes I have noticed are what I describe just plain sloppiness. For example: I don't care if the state name is misspelled on a census or birth certificate, don't list the state of Hesse-Darmstadt as Hasse Darnstedt; or Mecklenburg as Micklinberg, or Mechlenberg and so on; Such errors are propagated at lightning speed, and once they are on the web, they are difficult to correct. And lastly, since everyone has access to the family tree you so carefully prepared, it can and most likely will be copied and sold to others. Hi Bob You asked which ones don't charge for others to access? I agree with you. I know familysearch.org doesn't charge, rootsweb.com, but roots is connected with ancestry.com which charges. Anyway, I think it's great for those genealogists out there who would love to share their family info to help others find their relatives. So hopefully you'll share too. see ya allen "Now tell us which sites don't charge others to access. I don't like the fact that some make money from my labors. Bob"

Hello Ken, the place you want to contact is the EZA, short for Evangelical Central Archive, in Berlin. Whatever you cannot find at the LDS you will find here, especially records from the former East Germany and all other German states that were formerly part of Prussia and are now in Poland, Russia etc. I visited the EZA 2 years ago. This is a very small (compared to the LDS) and busy place and according to their website there is currently a waiting list of up to 3 months for an appointment to visit their archives. Unfortunately, the website is in German, but from what I gather, they will do a very limited amount of research for a fee. While there, I picked up a brochure I found on the secretaries' desk that was from 2 women who will do research for a fee. Be prepared to pay some Euros. Short of visiting the archives yourself, I would contact them and ask if they could refer a researcher for you. This would be much safer than looking for someone online. This has become a very lucrative business for some charlatans so buyer beware! These 2 women lived in Berlin and were regularly visiting the EZA, so they may combine their research with that from several clients. Here is the EZA homepage: http://www.ezab.de Email for general inquiries: [email protected] Fax No.: 011-49-30 / 2250 4540 I wish you luck with your research.
