    1. Re: [G-P-L] CRABIEL vs KREHBIEL
    2. Baerbel Johnson
    3. Krehbiel is a fairly common name in Southern Germany and Switzerland with a number of spelling variants. On www.stevemorse.org or ancestry.com you can search by parts of the name, so I would try Kreb* and Krehb* with the "exact search" box checked on Ancestry [The asterisk is a wild card that tells the computer to look for anything that begins with that letter combination], and using "begins with" on stevemorse.org [Then you don't need to use wild card symbol] . The second syllable is also often spelled "bühl", which is phonetically very close to "biel". Good luck! 3. Hi, Lorri ~ Check JewishGen Communities Database at http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/Search.asp (you may have heard of it as "ShetelSeeker", the prior name that means the equivalent of "hometown". A Bergfeld search comes out as today's Barchfeld, Hessen-Nassau, Preußen. Since I know nothing about German geography (Prussia was near Germany, wasn't it? .^_^.), I'll leave you to follow the links from the search. And to any comments other Listees care to make. In addition to this list's webpage & forum, there's a Rootsweb list called Prussia-Roots that's very helpful with these kinds of questions, though I haven't been there in at least 1+ years. http://www.germanyroots.comhttp://www.germanyroots.com/phpBB3/http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/DEU/PRUSSIA-ROOTS.html Good luck, Julia --- On Wed, 1/13/10, Lorri <[email protected]> wrote: ...the place he lived was BERGFELD would anyone have any Idea where this is?... 3. Lorri ~ Look at the upper left corner of their homepage. Immediately under "CastleGarden.org", you'll see three rectangular boxes "About Us", "Search", and "Timeline". You'll want to click & use all three. This is one of THE major search sites for European ancestors arriving in NYC prior to Ellis Island's opening - do try to get it to work for you. Perhaps if you used a different browser, it will work better? I use Opera & FireFox with no problem - so far!  It's absolutely (at this point) free to search, though they ask for donations. If they are helpful to you, consider making one. Although it's not set up to allow you to see the original documents, it will give you info on your ancestors that includes the ship they arrived on and date. With that info, you have several options available to you to see the original document (hey - you may totally disagree with the transcriber's interpretation!): 1Go to the National Archives (NARA) branch where that film can be seen (Washington has all the films, NYC has NYC manifests, Phidelphia has Baltimore's, etc) - free to search the films, though an 11 x 17 copy cost me $1.50, I think, 2 years ago. The NYC librarians were EXTREMELY helpful and even directed me to a microfilm of a 1930 Brooklyn directory that had my father listed with his brand new first wife. 2Buy the microfilm that contains that ship's info from the National Archives - cost $85/roll includes shipping. They no longer rent films. You can keep the film forever and pass it down in your family, donate it to a library or society after you're through, or cut it up into Christmas tree ornaments. 3Check if any major historical/genealogical societies within driving distance already has the NARA films 4See if your library can get the film through inter-library loan (perhaps from your state library) 5call your nearest Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) to ask where the closest Family History Center is and order the film through them (for a modest shipping fee), or go to FamilySearch.org and use your zip code to get the same info (bottom center of the homepage). Castle Garden's director is Dr. Ira Glazier who, with co-editor P. William Filby, produces the enormous (and somewhat flawed) series, GERMANS TO AMERICA, and other scholarly works (ITALIANS TO AMERICA and MIGRATION FROM THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE, etc). So it's not a fly-by-night website. Good luck! Julia --- On Wed, 1/13/10, Lorri <[email protected]> wrote: ...there is nothing to click on lorri

    3. I read somewhere in this place that Wolf recommended the book as above, I went to Amazon.com and ordered the book for US$1.86 (used hardcover) and the postage and the total came to AUS$16. I have read the Wurttemberg stories first and the Introduction (like a mini book in itself) detailing the reasons why they left etc. I want to thank Wolf for putting the book title where I saw it, it is the best money I have spent on a book for ages, and coincidentally did come across the surname of one of my target relatives in one of the chapters. It is such a great book, it explains so much through their letters home, and would recommend it to people with German relatives who want to know why and how. Dale Gough (Australia)

    3. I was wondering if any one can help me regarding this query. If a ship departs from Cape of Good Hope for Australia, does that mean this is the only place it collected passengers. My case in point: the ARMIN left Cape of Good Hope 1858 to arrive Sydney 1858 with two of my target German immigrant steerage passengers. On the crew and passenger list it doesn't name them but lists them as single male and female INTERMEDIATE German immigrants. The people in question are Christopher Martin or Martin Christopher Ruprecht born 1837 Waldbach Wurttemberg and Friedericke Rosina Rapholt/Raphold/Rapold/Rapbold (there seem to be many variations of the name, she would have been pregnant and it is suggested by one source she gave birth to a daughter soon after arrival in Sydney. So if they embarked at the Cape of Good Hope, how did they get there? If by another ship from a German port how do I find this out, or could the Armin been en route to the Cape of Good Hope and had picked up the hundreds of German immigrants at a German port by arrangement? I cannot quite see the disembarkation of hundreds of poor immigrants with their goods and chattels walking from one ship to another in SW Africa! Any assistance is welcome, Dale Gough

    3. Doug, this may be a case where the distinction made in Hamburg Passenger Lists between "direct" and "indirect" immigration comes into play. The explanation given is that Hamburg to Baltimore or New York, or Australia or Brazil would be considered a "direct" emigration. Whereas the "indirect" immigration would be from Hamburg to other ports in Europe [e.g. Marseilles] and from there subsequent transport to other ports such as New Zeeland, Australia, etc. You will need the year/month of immigration to do a search. Hamburg records start in 1853 [I believe], to be sure, check the description of the records under 'Immigration' then 'Hamburg Passenger Ship Lists and Indices' on Ancestry.com. 3. Hi Bev, In the late 1700's parts of Germany suffered from the Seven Years War. At times there were crop failures and diseases. Catherine the Great came to power in 1762. She offered German settlers that would come to Russia land, a reprieve from taxes for a number of years and I believe also freedom from conscription into the army for a number of years. I'm sorry I am fuzzy on the exact details. I'm sure if you checked on Catherine the Great and Russia you would be able to find them. 3. what is the castle garden site? Far too many were. The name you give offers many possibilities for entry into a ship's manifest by an American crew member. Creative and broad-minded searching may be needed: Johan, John, George, Andreas, Andrew, and I hate to think what they could have done to Langohr! Or perhaps the ship manifest is illegible, damaged, or remains to be transcribed. If you aren't sure of the port of embarkation, then don't despair - perhaps embarkation records exist. Other ports have a greater collection of archived material than poor Bremen has. The Castle Garden site has this person, but you probably already know this: Last name First name Age Sex Arrival Date Town of Origin LANGOHR JOHANN 54 M 19 Jun 1854 UNKNOWN Register your relative's name the list's website database and join in the discussion forum. People from other Germany-related lists participate there in addition to the G-P-L; many are actual Germans! Putting the emigrant's name in the subject line may attract more curiosity. All the best and stay warm in Canada, Julia --- On Sun, 1/3/10, Al Langohr <[email protected]> wrote: ...my relative Johanne George Andreas Langohr left Germany in 1852, but I have not yet found the Ship or Passenger list he came on... 3. How jingoistic of me! I never even thought your ancestor came to CANADA!!! I heartily apologize. Although I've never had to search for an emigrant into Canada, you can try finding manifest info at these places: Moving Here, Staying Here: The Canadian Immigrant Experiencehttp://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/immigrants/index-e.html Library and Archives Canadahttp://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html Again, good luck, Julia (By the way, should you want to, you can get a little bit more info about Johann at Castle Garden by clicking on the surname after you search for Langohr.)
