What would be the most common ports of entry that the Germans came through for me to be able to start searching the records. The time frame would be 1870-1892. My entire family is from the Milwaukee area. Most of my family lived around Milwaukee/Waukesha County at one time. They came through New York. This was before Ellis Island. There were ports up and down the east coast though as well as Canada, Louisiana/Texas .Happy hunting!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith Schweitzer" <junan37@hotmail.com> To: <GERMANS-WI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2003 8:29 PM Subject: [GERMANS-WI] Immigration Ports? > What would be the most common ports of entry that the Germans came through > for me to be able to start searching the records. Depending on whether or when they Naturalized you can often find port of entry, date and ship on these papers. You do not need to know court or state etc to begin a search through the Department of Justice, Immigration & Naturalization Service. . I have submitted well over 30 requests and have been successful with about half of them. They send copies of the papers to you. No SASE required and it is free. Takes up to 6 months to get a reply but well worth it. I have been requesting what are called C-Files using a standard letter I have developed. If you are interested in this approach eMail me and I will give you details and send you a copy of my Form Letter and some hints. Below is a site that explains C-Files http://www.immigration.gov/graphics/aboutus/history/NatzRec/NATREC.htm D ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith Schweitzer" <junan37@hotmail.com> To: <GERMANS-WI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2003 6:29 PM Subject: [GERMANS-WI] Immigration Ports? | What would be the most common ports of entry that the Germans came through | for me to be able to start searching the records.
