This is the first step. To find this you will have to look at census and church records, and try to find an approximate (ideally definite) date of arrival. Depending on the year some census records will also specify where in other countries your ancestors came from. Once you have a date or range of dates, you can search for your family on passenger lists, naturalizations records and the like. I have a directory of sites and databases for this sort of thing here: http://www.awesomegenealogy.com/Genealogy/immigration.shtml If you're lucky and can find the region they came from there are many regional german sites which may help you, as well as various german mailing lists. I have a page for that, along with a number of helpful tips ie translating surnames, occupations, regions in germany etc which can be found here: http://www.awesomegenealogy.com/german.shtml Good luck in your search!
