Dear List members, I hope that you all had a Merry Christmas! I am posting this to remind you that there will be many Newbies joining the lists after they get new computers for Christmas. Please keep this in mind when you see a post that appears on the list that indicates a very new person to the internet & genealogy. 1. Please NEVER send the following to any Rootsweb list: Virus warnings "Me, too" messages Lost child messages Broadcast off-topic messages that the sender has requested be forwarded to all lists. 2. Praise in public; criticize in private. If you do not like how someone formats their message to the list, don't write to them on or off list to tell them ---that is up to me as the List manager and you must take it up with me and not the other list member. 3. If you have a problem with any list, do *not* post a message about it to any list. Address it to LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb replacing "LISTNAME" with the actual list name. Or better yet, use the link provided on the specific List home page for the administrator and it will be sent to me, already indicating what list that you are writing to me about. List members can do nothing to help solve your problems with the list (no mail, can't unsub, strange error messages, can't post, etc.) and any posting to the list on such is unwelcome email to all other list members. Opinions about how any list is managed or comments that are made about the List Administrator's rules, or messages to the list in this vein will not be tolerated and means you will be removed from the list without warning. 4. If you believe that the behavior of another list member is inappropriate, do *not* take the person to task *on* the list. Address such concerns to the list manager, and it will be my thankless task to resolve it. 5. The topic of each list is listed on each individual list home page. Everything else is "off-topic" If you have a matter you'd like to discuss but are not sure if it is "on topic", please check with the list manager, before posting it. 6. If you post ANYTHING off topic, especially regarding VIRUSES, you will be removed without warning. The best place to check all lists that you are subscribed to is PASSWORD CENTRAL -- Please do this before contacting me. In most cases this will answer your question about whether or not you are still on the list. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Taglines are short one-liners that list managers can cause to appear in a somewhat random manner following individual messages on the mail (-L) version. Digest (-D) members never see these. Actually, they represent, in 10 short blurbs, my collective advice to list-members. They are also subject of periodic revision. I will include URL's that may be helpful to you from time to time in these taglines. WE ARE NOT ALONE! Search archives of related mailing lists/boards/forums. You do not have to be subscribed. Listed in order of traffic in 12-98, highly subject to change. In/on each, you find people that you do not see on the others. The small lists have good stuff, too. Expect some graffiti on the unmoderated message forum boards. Search any Rootsweb mailing list archives: ENTER NAME OF ROOTSWEB MAILING LIST ARCHIVES TO BE SEARCHED http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl You will need to "already know" the name of the list to be entered: Rootsweb mailing lists http://lists.rootsweb.com/ If you would like to apply these same search procedures on all of the USGenWeb archives (like the pension statements, wills and deeds we have uploaded to county/state archives), you can do so here: SEARCH THE USGENWEB ARCHIVES BY STATE http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm Many blessings for a Happy New Year and may it bring you many new cousin connections! I'm searching for information on Anton Mueller. Anton was born in or near Trier (Prussia), Germany and emigrated ca. 1840-42. His known children are Michael Anthony Mueller/Miller (b. 1837, Prussia, d. 1892, St. Paul, MN), Mathew Miller, Hubert Miller, Elizabeth Miller, Barbara Miller, Lucy Miller and Catherine (Kitty) Miller. All children were born in Germany but I have no dates or places for any but Michael Anthony. Michael Anthony Miller, my great grandfather, enlisted in the Union army (Co. A, 9th Regt., Wisconsin infantry) in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on 11 May 1861. He was married to Katherine Stein (b. 1841 in Luxembourg, emigrated 1851 to Sheboygan) There is an Anton Mueller/Miller, listed in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census, from Springfield, Dane, Wisconsin married to Elisabeth Stupfel. I'm trying to determine if this Anton Mueller/Miller is my great great grandfather. If so, he would have re-married as he has two known children by Elisabeth Stupfel (John Miller, b. 1854 in WI and Maria "Mary" Miller, b. 1850 in WI). Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mark R. Miller mmiller@ebulon.com http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ebulon

I live a block from the courthouse in Iron Mountain, which is right on the Wisconsin border. Anyone who was brought to the hospital from the surrounding area and died in Iron Mountain would be listed in the death records there. The death records are in large books and the information has to be transcribed by hand. No death certificates are available. Forwarded by List Admin. >>Subj: East & West Prussia Gazetteer Date: 12/9/2002 9:10:51 AM Central Standard Time From: rloss@bellsouth.net To: GERMANS-WI-L@rootsweb.com Sent from the Internet (Details) The following is a link to East and West Prussia (as in provinces of) that gives you an idea of the churches in each village or the district churches (Kreises) that records were kept. Note please!!!, this is only for the provinces of East and West Prussia, not Prussia as a territory. Obviously, East and West Prussia no longer exist and supposedly the records (some) were moved ahead of the advancing Red Army in WW2. The final repository is suppose to be in Berlin but at this time, I do not have the address. Another link included for the University of Wisconsin- Madison Library for the download of the Ravenstein Atlas (excellent because you can enter the name of a village or city) and come up with a graph indicator of where your place of research is located (if you are not sure). If you download the map to photopaper, you can have an excellent source for your particular "search". The map/atlas (Ravenstein) is for the whole of Prussia/Germany as it was in about 1871. Gavin, I'm sorry it took a few days to get back to your inquiry. I lost a brother to catastrophic illness Dec. 5th and funeral arrangements have taken time and energy. Our Schmitt line (both Schmidt and Schmitt before 1700) comes from the Odenwald area of North Baden, once part of the "Palatinate", capital Heidelberg. The main village is Muelben, now incorporated into the "community" of small villages in the area and known as "Waldbrunn". The parish jurisdiction was (and remains) both the Catholic and Lutheran churches in the main village, Struempfelbrunn. Lines of these Schmitts seem to originate in Scheidenthal (near Schlossau) and Schollbrunn (near Mosbach). I have other Schmidt ancestral lines (there are five all together), one in Muensingen, Canton Bern, Switzerland (Schmitt is the most numerous surname in that country), another in the present Saarland (near the capital, Saarbruecken). So it's not really easy to answer your questions. I have several collateral lines of Schmidt, Schmitt relations as well, one from the Homburg/Saar area, others from the "Sickingen lands" (former baronetcies now part of Rheinland-Pfalz state near Landstuhl and Kaiserslautern. There are also a number of Schmitt connections from my Grandmother's family in the Daun area of the Eifel district (north of the Mosel river between Koblenz and Trier. Where does you Schmitt family originate? I have come to the conclusion after many years of family "research" that everyone of German extraction is related to one Schmitt or another! This certainly makes for a vast extended family, but none the less interesting. It is so much more of a challenge to research a common name like mine than a less "popular" one. Let me hear from you. I am looking for a location of a town in Germany listed on a birth certificate. The name looks like B__eusen, Germany. Supposedly the family was said to be from Berlin, and I am wondering if there is a town near Berlin with a spelling close to this. The B could be a "P" but looks more like a "B". Lenora from Wis.
