Surnames: EGGEBRECHT Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/sSC.2ACIAE/27 Message Board Post: I'm looking for information on Robert EGGEBRECHT, son of John Theorder EGGEBRECHT. In the 1880 U.S. Census, the family is shown as living in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The father, John, was born in Prussia and "labors in Foundry." His 16 year-old son was a Machinest born in WI. Roberts siblings were: Alvina [20], Anna [14], and Richard [10]. Their mother was Ricka [Friedericka], also born in Prussia. Sometime after 1880 son Robert immigrated to Monterey County, CA and proved a land patent in 1892. He died in Monterey County on April 23, 1944 at the age of 80. Robert's original homestead residence is about to be conserved as it is now on National Park land and I am trying to find out background information on Robert. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Anita C. Monterey County

    1. [GERMANS-WI] Church record in 1944
    2. Yes, priests are busy, but a 1944 record is probably in English and you have the exact date, so I vote you try. If you were fishing in a range of years (like "between the 1900 federal census and the 1905 state census") in the time period where the records were likely to be in old German handwriting, but the language is Latin, now that would be a different--much harder--search! Wait until after Easter, and prepare to be patient. Check the book The Catholic Church in Wisconsin by Harry H. Heming for church founding dates etc. It was published in the late 1890s and is organized by diocese then by city or village.

    1. [GERMANS-WI] Re: church records for birthplace
    2. Joseph & Regan Kanaley
    3. Thanks to all who gave ideas about checking church records for an ancestor's birthplace. I tried checking my ggrandfather's marriage records in Ft. Atkinson, Jefferson Co but came up empty handed. The civil record of the marriage shows St. John's Catholic Church but they have nothing listed at the church for him. His parents are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Jefferson and I wonder if anyone knows whether there was a St. Joseph's Catholic Church there during the 1880's? His funeral was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Juneau, Dodge Co in 1944. I've hesitated writing the church because most priests are way too busy nowadays and that's probably the last thing they want to do - look up old records! Naturally, 1944 is too recent for FHL filming to be available.

    1. [GERMANS-WI] German birthplace search
    2. I second Jane's motion to try the church version of all records--marriage, death, births of kids etc. German-trained pastors continued the detailed style of records required in the old country--birthplace, mother's birth name, etc. Start with the church mentioned in the obit or the one where they were married.

    3. To Dawn and Gloria, THANK YOU! Gloria, I thought Edward had died in WI, but what you found shows he may have gone to California in 1886 with the other family members. You have jump started a waning search. I appreciate your time and response. Thanks again! Lynn:)

    1. Re: [GERMANS-WI] HARTMANN; Dodge Co. records
    2. Hi, Do not know if this will help either, but my gggrandfather's place of birth was notated next the to entry of his death in the church book (St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ft. Atkinson). Perhaps they did the same in Dodge Co. His sister's place of birth was also recorded in the same manner and was in the same area but not the same place. His mother's death was only marked by the names of her surviving children. So the chruch records may be a source. Bob Sommerfeldt

    2. Joseph & Regan Kanaley
    3. I am new to this list and need some ideas. I'm trying to find out my ggrandfather's place of birth in Germany. So far I've checked all available census' for Dodge County, obituary, gravestone, naturalization record, marriage record, death cert., his children's birth records. Does anyone know of any other avenues I should be checking? Anton HARTMANN was born in Württemberg, Germany in 1859 and immigrated in either 1880 or 1881. He married Eva MAY in Ft. Atkinson, Jefferson Co., WI in 1887 and the following year they moved to Juneau, Dodge Co. where he lived the remainder of his life. He owned and operated a bakery in Juneau until his retirement and then worked some for the railroad. Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. Regan Kanaley Martville, NY

    3. HI, I don't know if this will help you, but it sure was a windfall for me. I looked at the church's baptismal records for all of my gggfa's children. I couldn't find the records for the 1st two, but bonanza on the 3d. It gave both parents' full name and where they came from in Württemberg (now Germany). When I looked at the baptismal record for my ggmo, six years later than for her brother, it said hardly anything. So try; you might luck into something. 2. Randy & Lynn
    3. Hello Listers, I'm new to this list, and I'm hoping to locate any info on my GGG-grandfather Edward Von der Kuhlen. I have only been able to find Edward on the 1875 Wisconsin Census for Fond du Lac County, Lamartine Township. I know that his wife and daughter were both born in Essen, Germany. I have had no success in finding when they came into the U.S. I thought if anyone has any cemetery, census, or any other info for Fond du Lac County that might include Von der Kuhlen's (I have found this to be a very rare surname) I would appreciate it.

    3. Florence-- That all depends on what time period you're talking about. The boundaries of Prussia and other German states changed over time. Here is a list of map sites that may help: http://feefhs.org/maps/indexmap.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~wggerman/map/ http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/rindex.htm http://www3.adnc.com/~lynnd/vupmap5.html http://thorin.adnc.com/~lynnd/vumap2.html It really helps a lot to learn about German history and geography to do genealogy in Germany. Hope this helps, Kathy alsstamp@netscape.net wrote: > > I received the marriage license today for my grandparents John and Anna (nee SIEGEL) BECKER. It says John was born in Franzenhein, Prussia and Anna was born in Heinen, Silesia. If anyone could give me some indication where either or both of these places are, I would be delighted.
