Hi all, I think since it has been so very quiet on this 300+ member list that I will share some goodies. I have finally finished transcribing the book "Growing Up With Tulsa" by Blanche Opal Kern Schad---- and though it is not anywhere NEAR Wisconsin, the author, a first cousin of my G-grandpa HARRISON, was married to a GERMAN WISCONSIN man, Erwin SCHAD. I invite you all to take a look at the book and especially the Chapter 12 - Odds & Ends which has some GERMAN family recipes. You may also enjoy Opal's stories as much as I have enjoyed them. This book has been reprinted by permission of Harry Schad, son of the author Blanche Opal Kern Schad. This book was written and self published by Blanche Opal Kern Schad of Tulsa, OK. She was a Harrison descendant and first cousin to my G-grandfather, Herman Harrison who lived in Saunders Co., Nebraska. Opal's mother Emma Justine Harrison and my GG-grandfather Richard Harrison (Cuming Co., NE) were siblings. Emma and her husband Charles Wesley Kern went from Saunders Co., NE to OK Territory in 1893 and settled in Tulsa. Opal & her mother Emma are in the photograph above. This is a story of the family and Opal and her older siblings and later their own families growing up with Tulsa from territorial days to statehood and through 2 World Wars, etc. Opal's son Harry of Tulsa, OK gave me permission to transcribe and put his mother's book online. It is not available, except at the Tulsa library and by Opal's immediate family. Reproduced by Kathie Harrison (Harry's second cousin twice removed). http://freepages.books.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/tulsa/index.html http://freepages.books.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/tulsa/schad1.html http://freepages.books.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/tulsa/odds-ends.htm Remember that you can share GERMAN family recipes on this list or discuss GERMAN family traditions of your GERMAN Wisconsin ancestors. We do allow this along with the genealogy of the GERMAN-WI families. ENJOY! PA means he had started his first papers, so you can now look for those, plus his naturalization records at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/wisconsin.shtml Be sure to read the intro to Wisconsin Naturalization records, then click on ONLINE records (for a Directory of Links to all online records for WI) then OFFLINE records to get the Resource Guide that explains what is available and where it is. Let the pages load before you start clicking, and be sure to read all the way to the bottom You can read more about the value of census records in your search for an immigrant ancestor at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/census.shtml There are great clues in the 1870 census too! If your ancestor has a check mark in the column "Male Citizens of the United States of twenty-one years of age and upwards" you have a clue that naturalization took place before 1870 :-) To find out what questions were asked on various census records see http://www.ipums.umn.edu/~pipums/voliii/tQuestions.html Enjoy! Florence, I believe it stands for "papers applied for." That's what I was told after I had spend over a year looking for an ancestor in PA when I first started researching. Susan ....hoping not to always learn things the hard way.
List members, I have been seeing an increase in subscribers using anti-spam programs such as MailWiper, SPAMCOP, etc. The use of these programs is NOT allowed if you want to remain on any Rootsweb lists. No one should be expected to register their address for someone else on the list to receive your messages. So, remember that if any of you receive an auto-reply from someone using such a program after you post to the list, PLEASE e-mail the admin. ASAP and send them a copy of that message with the address of the user of the program. I will UNSUBSCRIBE them immediately. Same applies to AUTO-REPLIES used by those who are subscribed to the list from a work address. If you use these I will remove you from the list and not allow you back on the list unless you can assure me that you will no longer use them. They wreak havoc on the server and are extremely annoying to your List Admin. If you have a question about this contact me privately and NOT on the LIST. Can anyone tell me what it means on the census under the "Naturalization" column for it to have the notation "Pa"? This notatation in on for my great grandfathers in both Manitowoc and Marathon Counties. I appreciate it. The Calumet County Reporter began in 1902; ceased in Sept. or Oct., 1919, and has been saved from Sept. 1908 to 1919. It was published in New Holstein, and since that's where you fellow is buried, that is where he was part of the community and most likely to have a good obit. To find WI newspapers, go to the books and serials catalog for the Wisconsin Historical Society--it's in with the UW catalog at: http://madcat.library.wisc.edu/index.html This will tell you what newspapers are on microfilm, plus notes on when they were published. You can search by the name of the city where the paper was published. It is my understanding that about 3/4 of the newspapers ever published in WI in English have been saved and lesser amounts of ethnic language ones. They particularly are likely to have films of whatever was the official paper for the county. If you live in WI, there is currently no charge to get these films on Interlibrary Loan (our tax dollars at work!), but folks from out-of-state pay a fee.

Once you've established which newspaper covered that area during that time period you can request that specific microfilmed newspaper through your local libraries inter-library load program if it's been microfilmed. At times, a popup will appear and ask for your basic information (mailing address and who you are looking for).......if you fudge a bit, you can get through this as it is a solicitation of funds to run the site and program......again, you have to have a basic knowledge of German. The site does not have all deaths, they are working on providing more information. Some information is sketchy (first and last names only), but if you hit the motherload, you will get first and last names, rank, place of birth, place of death and burial cemetery. Some of the information is from WW1, mostly from WW2. There are sites for American, English, Canadian war deaths but you have to go to Google to find the site address. http://www.google.com Regards, Robert Lipprandt ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Subject: [GERMANS-WI] Schild/Manuel, Grant County, WI > SCHILD, Ernest/Ernst born Baut, Germany 1905, Possibly returned to Germany > to fight for Hitler.

To the person asking about records of St Francis Catholic Church: The Mormon FHL in Hales Corners has almost all of the Milwaukee Archdiocse films in its films on permanent loan. Dear Robert, Yes, all the Hilkers in Racine are directly related. There are other Hilker families in Wisconsin outside of Racine that I haven't figured out their ties yet. Thank you for sending my information on. I appreciate it. Carol
Here are the German families I'm researching in Wisconsin: Rudolph HANSCHE and descendants - Rudolph was born Dec 8, 1812 in Lienen, Germany died Sept 8, 1882 in Racine, Wisconsin. He married Anna SOERGEL who was born April 14, 1831 in Germany and died on her birthday, April 14, 1901 in Racine. Anna's brothers lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Augustus PIPER (nee' KRUMMPIEPER) was born the August 19, 1825 in Halle, Germany and died January 31, 1896 in Racine, Wisconsin. He married Margaret BRAID who was born in Scotland. Augustus (Gus) and Rudolph were on the same ship coming over to America. They were shipwrecked off the coast of Haiti and spent the winter of 1840-41 in Santo Domingo. Gus' mother died of Yellow Fever there. Ferdinand HILKER was born August 5, 1866 in Shoetmar, Germany and died June 24, 1949 in Racine, Wisconsin. He was married to Lydia HEISER who was born Dec 27, 1872 in Nebraska and died August 20, 1937 in Racine, Wisconsin. Ferdinand's parents lived in Racine for a brief period of time. They were Philip and Charlotte. I would love to find pictures of them as I have none. They moved to South Dakota with a daughter and her husband. Samuel HENDERLITER/HINDERLITER was born Sept 12, 1822 in Wilkes-Barre PA and died April 7, 1905 in Highland, Wisconsin. He was married to Malinda AINEAU ( ANO or ANOU). Carol Pattison
