    1. [GERMANS-WI] LUX family
    2. Karen Schrade
    3. My great-grandfather, Herman LUX(b. 12/20/1857 in Sellin, pomern) and his wife Terese (nee KRIEWALL, b. 11/08/1861 in Briesnitz near Baldenburg) Emigrated to Milwaukee some time between 1887 (when my grandfather was born in stettin) and 1891 (when their next son was born in milwaukee). I have had little luck in getting more information about them. After the discussion of naturalization papers, I would like to try to find them for Herman, terese, and my grandfather, Willie Herman Max Lux. Can someone tell me how I go about getting these records? I am fairly sure they exist somewhere since on the 1920 census, my grandfather is listed as having been naturalized. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Karen, near chicago kschrade@concentric.net

    1. [GERMANS-WI] Naturalizations
    2. A man could be naturalized in any "court of record." That means county court or circuit court or the federal district court, but not justice of the peace. And it didn't have to be done in the county they lived in. If they were close to a county line and another county seat was easier to travel to, that was OK. Jim Hanson, the genealogist at the Wisconsin Historical Society tells of searching all the neighboring counties for one of his ancestors and finding him by accident while looking for something else. The guy had traveled a couple of counties away to the federal district court. Apparently he figured if he was going to be a US citizen he needed to do it in a US court. If an ancestor lives all the way to 1920, the census asks for year of naturalization. A fine example of why it is useful to check all censuses which cover an individual.

    3. My gg grandfather and his son (18 ) were in the Civil war. I can't find naturalization papers for them. Was it possable that if they fought in the war they didn't have to have papers. My other g grandfather filed and got his papers 5 years after he arrived but he wasn't in the war. My g grandfather from England don't have naturalization papers either. He was a Minister for the Church of England and he was very involved with the underground railroad in PA. Was he exempt also? Thanks for any help, Thelma Thelma

    1. [GERMANS-WI] Naturalizations
    2. Remember, the sons had to wait until they were 21 to start naturalization. And daughters will not have been naturalized, as women didn't have the right to vote! Furthermore, you didn't have to be naturalized at all. If you are lucky, someone waited until the Declaration of Intent forms asked more questions. In the meantime, the 1900 census asks each person what year they came to this country, which might help you help the Area Research Center focus the search.

    1. [GERMANS-WI] A Golden Wedding
    2. I thought I would share this story written about the (Wisconsin German) Schreiner's and my GG-uncle John Edward Connell and his wife Mary (Lord) who celebrated their golden wedding anniversaries together. John was a well-known and decorated Civil War officer (Union). He was the brother of my GG-grandmother Elizabeth Connell Harrison. John's daughter Roah married Albert Henry Schreiner, son of Jacob Schreiner. Jacob Schreiner was born in Dexbach, Grand Duchy Hessen Darmstardt, Germany December 01, 1838 and died February 23, 1923 in Grant Co., WI. Memorable Event in West Grant's History When Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schreiner and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Connell of Bloomington Jointly Observe Anniversary. Taken from Fennimore Times (Grant County, Wisconsin), April 4, 1917. The circumstance of two couples getting married less than a week apart, living as good friends and neighbors for fifty years, and still being more closely connected by the marriage of a daughter of one couple to a son of the other, and then celebrating their fiftieth anniversary together is certainly so rare as to occasion special mention. Such is the history of Messrs. and Mms. Jacob Schreiner and J. E. Connell of Bloomington. Mr. and Mrs. Schreiner's anniversary is March 26th, and Mr. and Mrs. Connell's a few days later--March 31st. The two dates being so close together, they resolved to observe the occasion with a union celebrated. March 28th was the day celebrated and as a result, about one hundred relatives and friends gathered at the Jacob Schreiner home to help the worthy couples make merry and turn the hands of time back over the busy short years. The Jacob Schreiner house was fully decorated and a profusion of yellow and white cut flowers delighted the eye and gave out a pleasant fragrance, even unto the remote corners. The days events started with a reception at the Schreiner home, after which the entire party repaired to Congregational church dining room where the feast was ready. This was the largest and most conspicuous number on the program and under the direction of the two ladies entertaining could not fail to be a success. After "full" time was given to the delicacies prepared for the occasion, the following program of toasts was rendered, with J. B. Ludden as toastmaster. M. F. Woodhouse --" Auld Lang Syne" or "Memories of Fifty Years Ago." S. E. Pearson - "Congratulations." Rev. Geo. C. Safford--" Our Hosts." Rev. J. W. Taylor of Campbellsport, Wisconsin--"Our Hostesses." Mrs. Ina Ketner-- Reading of poem, "The Golden Wedding," written by Ernest Brooks. Rev. A. T. Lacey of Endeavor, Wisconsin--" Men and Husbands." Mrs. Lillie G. Bartley--" Wives and Sweethearts." During this program several splendid vocal selections were rendered by a choir composed of S. E. Pearson, Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Woodhouse and Mrs. Bartley. To be present on this happy occasion and felicitate with the worthy celebrants of the rare and momentous event, the following guests came from their homes in distant cities: Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Brodtkorb and four children of Edgeley, N. D.; Mrs. Henry Edwards of Alma Center, Wis.; Mrs. Dr. McCallister of Avoca, Wis.; Rev. and Mrs. J. W. Taylor and daughter of Campbellsport, Wis.; Rev. and Mrs. A. T. Lacey of Endeavor, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. David Schreiner, Mrs. H. E. Schreiner and Mrs. Ernest Alt of Lancaster, Wis. The extended acquaintance of the persons connected with this happy occasion and the esteem in which they are held by the entire community, renders a brief sketch of their lives necessary to round out a complete report. The data procured only after a promise had been given to refrain from wholesome praise or undue prominence, the subjects modestly protesting that nothing connected with their lives would warrant public attention. The community is the best judge of the life and services of individuals, and so these people whose lives are briefly reviewed must permit their friends of a lifetime to place them where they know they belong-- well toward the top of the list of those whose services have made the community better for their having lived and labored with us for so many years. 3. Stacey: I forwarded your info to my grandmother (who also has Krueger lines) and this is what she sent me back. The "she" is referring to you :-) ---- I did have Frank entered, but only had his wife as Rose, and only had Wilmer's info, so she is helping me also. Went into Ellis Island and found a Franz Kroeger who came over in 1901, gave his age as 18, was a U.S. citizen, had been born here, and his parents lived in New York at 1066 3rd Ave. He arrived on 31 Oct. on the Kaiserin Maria Theresia from Bremen, Germany. Very interesting - as Forest Junction is the area where many of the Kruegers I've searched lived. I have been trying to find a Julius Krueger also (born about 1840). He was listed as the son of Carl, my great-great grandfather on the passenger list. But I could never find him in any area around here. So I will keep looking. May have some of these other names she's mentioned listed separately - not knowing where to place them. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Y!
