Jane: They PROBABLY all had the same "first name." Johann, e.g., Johann Georg, Johann Joseph, Johann Mathias. The common practice was to name all the family males after a patron saint or relative. But they would be known by their "middle names." "John" may have been the oldest and kept that moniker. For example, my g-grnd was Johann Mathias and had brothers Johann Franz and Johann David. He went by Mathias John and his brothers were Franz (later Frank) and David John.
