Hi My great-grandfather was an officer on the losing side in the Battle of Langensalsa in 1866, when Prussia over-ran Hannover. Apparently he had to slip out; I do not know if he evaded draft in the Prussian military, was drafted and 'went over the hill', or refused a commission in the Prussian military. Anyway, he rode a coaler deadheading to England, took a train across England and a ship to New York. (As this was after our Civil War, cheap passage to New Orleans had passed.)
