    2. My German Greatgrandfather(Charles Herman Fickenwirth) , a carpenter, went from St. Louis to England (for work?) in 1902. He was there about 6 months. I am unable to find his name at Ellis Island. What port could he possibly leave from when living in St. Louis? Any ideas? Donna St Louis surnames: Fickenwirth, Kuhl, Herzog

    3. I agree with the other person that I would look at New Orleans as the port. Remember it was easier to travel directly by water than to go overland. Happy Hunting, Lisa Dunn Washougal. 3. Hi Donna: New Orleans, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston all had ships to Europe at that time. If you know when he went to England and on which ship, you might check the NYTimes to see if it left from there - believe most larger libraries have their archive tapes or uplink. If so, you MIGHT reason that he came back the same way. Of course, the decision probably came down to money, time and the bargains du jour. If he was a citizen, then he would not have had to go through Ellis. If he wasn't, was there a 'resident alien's status then that would have allowed him to bypass Ellis - especially if he had a wife or children here? Maybe someone out there could answer this.
