    3. I see that Lorraine signs off with "beautiful downtown Affton, Mo." Where is "downtown - Heege Road, Gravois, or Watson????? Just kidding! Didn't know Affton had a downtown. Yes, Bill, Read some time ago that Lemp Beer is going (or maybe is now) to be brewed again. Think it's a mini-brewery and will be served in the Soulard area? Regards, Bill Streitz Shalimar, FL

    3. I've seen the sign too - for Lemp Lager Beer. If I remember correctly from my Lemp research, it was the Lemps who introduced the lagering process here. This area was especially good for the beer brewing trade because of the many underground caverns that provided ideal temperatures for storing the containers of beer while it aged. Belleville IL also had a number of these early breweries for the same reason. A businessman recently bought a building near the heart of the downtown area. The basement was flooded, and when he had it pumped out he noticed that the walls and flooring resembled some of the pictures of an old brewery that had originally stood in that area. There was also a sealed up entranceway that appeared to go under the street which also led him to believe he had stumbled onto the old brewery. He was planning to open the passageway and allow archaeologists check it out and record their findings. Kay from the Illinois side of the big river. P.S. I live in Illinois but get around a lot in St. Louis and St. Louis County. I didn't realize that Affton had a downtown either. (Just kidding too!)
