    1. [Germans-STL] Bethlehem Lutheran Marriages - St. Louis
    2. Greetings, Everyone! The latest installment of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church records has been put online at http://genealogyinstlouis.accessgenealogy.com This is the group of marriages from 1850 - 1874. As always, you must have an open mind with respect to the spelling. Remember that in German B and P, F and V, W and V can be used interchangeably. There are several names that I recognize from Washington, Clinton and St. Clair Counties in Illinois. There are also a couple of Madison County names in here. Good luck in your searches. Gloria

    2. Jane Glaser
    3. Thanks Gary for looking. It is an easy name to mis-spell which is part of the problem of tracking him. As far as I know he didn't marry until he finally ended up in Elko, NV where he spent the rest of his life. Family lore also says he had a freight company in either San Francisco or Sacramento which I can't find either!! I DO know he was a gold miner in Plumas County California as I did find him there after he left St. Louis. Thanks again Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: Gary Stoltman To: GERMANS-STLOUIS-L@rootsweb.com ; jglaser@surewest.net Sent: Thursday, March 04, 2004 9:18 PM Subject: Re: [Germans-STL] GGrandfather Glaser Jane: Didn't find a Mathias or Johann/John Glaser in 1850 StL. Might be a father or uncle Mathias who looks to have been born in 1810 per 1870 census. 3. Hi Laura, Thanks for looking . Quite possible GG Grandpa Henry ROAK / ROKE and family headed for Grundy Co. Morris ILL by 1863. Henry's children were all young during the Civil War. Fred was b. 1849 Charles b.March , 1850 /51 William b. 1855 and young Henry b. 1856/ 57 . Depending on what census or document you believe. I also looked to see if any other member of the family may have fought in the War , but found nothing . Henry was a Coal Miner along with his Sons . The boys later Owned and operated Saloons and remained in that field , as far as I have found . Thanks again for your help and suggestions , they are definitely appreciated. 2. Joyce Spike
    3. Hi Carol , How often did the City Directories come out ? . Do you recall if there were any for 1863/ 64 or 65 ? . I am having the same problem, found my Henry ROAK / ROKE in St Louis Census 1860 . Don't know exactly when they came there . Census say 1857 family came to US . Can't find them on any ship . Think they docked in Louisiana , but no proof . Found them in Grundy Co, Morris ILL census 1870 " ROKE ". From then on name was ROAK . Does your Library have much info on immigrants who lived in St Louis at that time ? . Thanks for any info you might have , will be greatly appreciated . Sincerely Joyce joycespike@geneseo.net

    3. Tanks so much for your reply. Yes, The Wakenhauser you found from Shelbyville, Illinois marriage license is my great great grandfather. I'm trying to find his parents, he was born on the ship Hercules in 1836 or 37 and they settled in Highland area, I guess that would be Illinois or Missouri, he lived the first 19 years of his life in the Highland area.He was Joseph Wikenhauser although the name was spelled wrong on the marriage license, I think his father was Laurence Wikenhauser but know nothing on his mother. The Wickenhauser you found are probably my family , will have to dig deeper. I am searching from the 1850's.But Anything is appreciated.on that name or the different spellings. 3. Hi Johnnie: Found no Wikenhausers. There was a H. Wickenhauser in Wood River who ran for a poitical posision 2 Mar 1934 as reported by the Edwardsville Intellingencer. John W. was mentioned in a real estate transaction in 1937. You didn't provide a time period but these are probably too late. Yours from the 1850s? Found a Wakenhauser. 3. I don't know if this will be of any help to you or not, but at http://www.genealogienetz.de/misc/emig/pass1.html you will find a long list. The top part of the list is for the name. This microfilm will tell you a date and I guess, a page number. Then, look for that date at the bottom of this link for another roll of microfilm. This is a copy of the passport application. If nothing else, perhaps it will narrow down your time frame. I looked, hoping it was from Germany to America, but it seems to be the other way. Perhaps someone else knows more about this, and can add something to this. 1. [Germans-STL] Western Cloth Glove Company-St. Louis
    2. First, many thanks to the wonderful folks who have been so helpful in locating William Weitz and family in the time frame around 1910. This is one of the most helpful web sites I have found. Secondly, one very kind person found in a St. Louis, MO, city directory in 1910 that William Weitz was vice-president of the Western Cloth Glove Company, 3113 S. Broadway. My question: Could someone please tell me if this company is still in business or if it has changed its name or been bought up by some other company. Also, what kind of business would this company have been in 1910? What would the 3113 S. Broadway neighborhood have been in 1910 and today. I guess this is more than one question. Thank you so much and in advance for all your help. Frances

    1. [Germans-STL] Re: NEWSPAPER ADS for BARBERS
    2. My G gfather WILLIAM FREDERICH UMBACH (b. Apr 4 1846) was a barber who came from Wittenberg,Germany to St. Louis......He married ELIZABETH THERESA WAX Feb 27, 1866......He also went by the name of WILLIAM BAUERLEIN--think his mother might have re-married at some point and took his step-father's last name--and later went back to UMBACH... Was wondering IF anyone would have access to newspapers from that time--and IF barbers would have put ads in the papers then.....Thanks........ ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! 3. I think that I have a unique problem in tracing my gg grandfather's part of the tree. His name was Peter Mueller/Miller. The information that I have pieced together from the Family Bible, census, and marriage records seems to be that he came to the U.S. with his parents before 1850 and they were in St.Louis. In 1865 he married in Perry Co. Mo. I found him on the 1870 census. It says he was from Prussia. By 1880 his American wife had died. He left his two young children with friends in two different Mo. counties and returned to Germany. I found each of them on the census. My g grandmother always told me that she had expected him to come back and get her, but he never returned. Suprisingly, I find that just before she had married my g grandfather(in 1890) she lived in a house in Madison Co. Mo. full of people named Miller? This information was from a letter she had written to her fiance. Does anyone on the list have any idea how you find records of people that returned to their homeland in Germany? Are there ship lists for that type of thing? I have no idea of an exact date to search. Just a within + or - 10 years sort of thing. Thanks for any help or suggestions.
