    3. Here's what I come up with. In remembrance of the many emigrants from the area of what is now the city of Meerbusch. Between 1835 and 1865, more than 330 people left behind their homes during hard times to settle in the state of Missouri. They settled close to the location of Loose Creek, Westphalia, Frankenstein (County Osage) and St. Thomas. To this day they retain their mother tongue, our native Low German. 2. I "googled" one of my ancestor names the other night and the Emslanders list came up. I have checked this list some time ago but not recently. I found lots of information on my ancestors - incredible actually. Also, ABELN is there. Someone has been posting this surname and I may also have more of a connection than I thought. www.emslanders.com Question: Are there sites like this for other areas of Germany?? I still have several other surnames that I am researching and could use some clues to figure out the connections. Researching: LEMBECK; MOHRMANN; FUECHTEMANN; ELLERBACH; RALF; BLOMS and others Thank you Peggy N.

It's great tool and best of all - it's free! You do need to register with an account and it can be updated and changed regularly. 3. Jane: They PROBABLY all had the same "first name." Johann, e.g., Johann Georg, Johann Joseph, Johann Mathias. The common practice was to name all the family males after a patron saint or relative. But they would be known by their "middle names." "John" may have been the oldest and kept that moniker. For example, my g-grnd was Johann Mathias and had brothers Johann Franz and Johann David. He went by Mathias John and his brothers were Franz (later Frank) and David John. 3. Jane: Was thinking you might trace him back through "brother" Joseph? It is an easy name to mis-spell which is part of the problem of tracking him. As far as I know he didn't marry until he finally ended up in Elko, NV where he spent the rest of his life. Family lore also says he had a freight company in either San Francisco or Sacramento which I can't find either!! I DO know he was a gold miner in Plumas County California as I did find him there after he left St. Louis. > Thanks again > Jane > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Gary Stoltman > To: GERMANS-STLOUIS-L@rootsweb.com ; jglaser@surewest.net > Sent: Thursday, March 04, 2004 9:18 PM > Subject: Re: [Germans-STL] GGrandfather Glaser > > > Jane: > > Didn't find a Mathias or Johann/John Glaser in 1850 StL.
