Tiny fracture in my STECHER brick wall: just located the following lost family members. Seeking ANY information; hope to find descendants. Thank you! ------------------------------------ Arnold SCHANTL (born about 1875, son of JOHANNA Schantl from Switzerland, brother Lois) married my LOUISE STECHER after 1910. In 1910 Arnold worked at a brewery, and lived with Mother and brother at 1232 Ninth Street. ------------------------------------ Walter C HOPPE, born about 1883, married my AGNES STECHER around 1908. They lived on Sidney Street; he was a packer at a tea company. In 1920 they lived at 5040 Wells Avenue with children CARL HOPPE (9), LOUISE HOPPE(1), and Agnes' Mother Amelia Stecher. Walter was a dairy driver. In 1930 they lived with children Carl W. (19) & Louisa A. (11). Walter was a boss at a dairy; Carl a sheet metal draftsman. ----------------------------------- Agnes & Louise Stecher are daughters of August Stecher. They had one brother Rudolph Stecher and possibly one half brother OTTO, my GGrandfather. August is brother of the Rudolph Stecher who owned STECHER COOPERAGE WORKS and later RUDOLPH STECHER BREWERY in M'boro. All my Stechers (August, Rudolph, Ignatz, Joseph & Otto) emigrated to St. Louis 1864-1882, from Renchen, Baden, Germany. They worked for A. Busch before starting Cooperage Works in St. Louis and later Stecher Brewery in M'boro. ANY information very much appreciated, no matter how small! Many many thanks!
Finding info on the Prussian army would be nice. My G Grandfather was a soldier there before he came to the US. However all I have is a name, birthdate (est) and the fact that he served. Not much to go on, I know. Thanks for any and all info so far. Jeff St. Louis
Interesting to try to find this on google.com. There's some info on the Prussian military at: http://216.239.53.104/search?q=cache:xLCTQWxXiCoJ:web2.iadfw.net/napoleo n/prussians.htm+11th+hussaren&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 or at least that's the URL that came up after the search. Prussian military history site in German at: http://www.grosser-generalstab.de/ Has an interesting picture of hussaren (that's the German plural of "hussar". I may have found something: http://www.bogenschneider.org/military_records.htm This site has the following, available from the LDS: Von Lyncker, Alexander. Die preussischer Armee, 1807-1867 und ihre sippenkundlichen Quellen. 372 pages. 3-7686-3028-5. Verlag Degener & Co., Nuernberger Str. 27 D-91413 Neustadt/Aisch, Germany. Contains information on all Prussian regiments, their participation in battles, the places of the church records, the garrisons, area of recruitment, etc. It's in German, of course, but looks like it might contain what you want. Here's another source from that page: Deutsches Staatsarchiv, Archivstrasse 12-14, D-14195 Berlin. Write for military records before 1867. Hi My great-grandfather was an officer on the losing side in the Battle of Langensalsa in 1866, when Prussia over-ran Hannover. Apparently he had to slip out; I do not know if he evaded draft in the Prussian military, was drafted and 'went over the hill', or refused a commission in the Prussian military. Anyway, he rode a coaler deadheading to England, took a train across England and a ship to New York. (As this was after our Civil War, cheap passage to New Orleans had passed.) Thanks Gary. You're always helpful. I do think he was a citizen by that time, and he was married and had children in St. Louis. I do have the year he went to England, but no other info. I was hoping to find out why he went to England, and see if he listed any relatives, as I have none for him, other than the wife and children. Donna
Hi Donna: New Orleans, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston all had ships to Europe at that time. If you know when he went to England and on which ship, you might check the NYTimes to see if it left from there - believe most larger libraries have their archive tapes or uplink. If so, you MIGHT reason that he came back the same way. Of course, the decision probably came down to money, time and the bargains du jour. If he was a citizen, then he would not have had to go through Ellis. If he wasn't, was there a 'resident alien's status then that would have allowed him to bypass Ellis - especially if he had a wife or children here? Maybe someone out there could answer this.
