Would you (or anyone else on this list) happen to know who the musician was in the World's Fair in St. Louis who played the mandolin? My g grandfather was musically inspired by someone who was at the fair and I don't know who it was...supposedly someone well known. Mandolin playing has been passed down in my family since then (although I'm not any good at it - my Dad sure was!) Marian
Hi Fellow Listers: I recently found some information on my son-in-law's Brinker family and would like to be able to add to it if possible with some help you all out there. How can I find the death records/obituaries of John Bernard Brinker who died 14 Mar 1930 and his wife Agnes (Weiss) who died 7 Dec 1935--both in St. Louis? I am also looking for the death record of Baltasar/Balthazar Brinker b. 1808 in Germany and died 1872 in St. Louis. Do these records exist? If someone died in the 1849 cholera epidemic would there be death records for them also? Baltasar's first wife Catherine (Tepe) died 12 Jul 1849 in that epidemic. Thanking you all in advance for your help. Janice Connell El Paso, TX

Hi Frances: I'll take a line. <<Grandpa went "to the ball game" (my note - professional baseball team???)>> Since 1901, St. Louis had two major league baseball teams. The Cardinals and Browns. They both played at Sportsman's Park on North Grand. I'm sure there's plenty on the web - and probably for most of these. In my opinion, the best reference book for StL is "Lion of the Valley" by Primm - available in paperback - Amazon, etc. Have fun - you are lucky to have the diaries. The Odean was an opera theater. My Grandmother sang there. Besch's Grove I bet is Busch's Grove a restaurnt that recently closed I think the St. Louis Browns may have been a ballteam at that time...will have to check on that. Diaries are a great source of information about the real life your family led. It is a window into the past and shows how active your family was. Great find for you! The "Columbia" may have been the Columbia Theater located at the intersection of Southwest Ave and Columbia. Most of the building still stands but belongs to an individual that I believe rehabs buildings. I also think that the Columbia was a vaudeville theater before becoming a movie theater. My grandfather on my mom's side worked there for many years as a union projectionist until he either had a stoke or heart attack while working one night in the booth in 1966. Jeff St. Louis
Very interesting. My grandmother also made notes but was very young at the time. She also mentioned the Fair. She made notes up until the time she died. This has helped a lot with our family history. Donna Kelley Fickenwirth, Kuhl, Herzog

Hi Fellow Listers! I am helping my son-in-law, Hans Brinker, with his family history and have traced his immigrant ancestor (3ggg) to your area. We are trying to find additional info on the following: Balthazar/Baltasar Brinker b. @1808 OsnabrÜck, Saxony; Came into New Orleans @Jul 1839; d. 1872 in St Louis md #1 Catherine Tepe in Germany. She died of cholera in July 1849 in St Louis. . md#2 Anna Margaretha Roenker Aug 26, 1849 in St Louis One known child: John Burnett Henry Brinker/Johann Bernard Heinrich Brinker. He married Agnes Weiss 7 May 1878 in Wayne County, IN. I would be willing to pay a reasonable search and copy fee for any new information on the above family. Thanking you in advance for anything you can help us with. Sincerely, Janice Connell El Paso, TX
To the Fehlig researchers: I noticed that Theodore Fehlig was the President of the German St. Vincent's Orphan Society in 1889-90. I only noted this as my g-grand Mathias Stoltmann was a Verwaltungsrat (member of the Board of Directors). Ironically, Bob Fehlig was a good friend and grammar-high school mate of mine, three generations later. Gary Stoltman Mercerville, NJ

Kathy - Thanks so much for this information. It looks as though when my grandmother visited the "Kinloch office" in 1905 in St. Louis, that she was indeed going to visit where she had previously been employed before her marriage in January 1905 - the telephone company. I had heard many years ago that she had worked some kind of position like a switchboard operator, and it would seem that she did work for the Kinloch phone company. Thanks again. I do have more questions from the 1905 diary to be asked in a future e-mail. Frances
