    3. Hello List, While searching for Gerhard Grueter, father of Elizabeth Grueter Wieland, I found an 1850 Census for Cincinnati, OH. On the census there is also a listing for a Friedrich Buchholz, his wife Louisa, his son John, daughter Louisa, and a Barbara Geiler. I thought this might be of interest to those searching Buchholz. Kathlyn Goedeker Wieland Goedeker, Wieland, Grueter, Hohenstein, Jennings of Calhoun County, Reeder, and Schott of Apple Creek, MO

    1. Bethlehem Lutheran Church Confirmands 1870-97
    2. Greetings, Everyone! Dave Lossos has added some more Bethlehem Lutheran Church records on his site: http://genealogyinstlouis.accessgenealogy.com These are confirmation lists from 1870 to 1897. At first I thought it would not be worth transcribing these records because in many cases the lists consist of nothing more than a last name under a header of "Boys" or "Girls." However, some years contain a goldmine of information. They contain the person's birth date, father's name, place of birth and in a few, also the place of Baptism. There are lots of Illinois births, some other states as well as Germany locations. Plus a few other countries too. As always, keep in mind how difficult these microfilmed records are to read. Good luck in your searches! Gloria

    1. Fout (Faut) & Meissen
    2. Fredrick Wilhelm Fout born in Meissen in the county of Buckeburg and Duchy of Schaumburg-Lippe, Westphalia Germany, ( His parents were Frederick Wilhelm and Sophia (Spanuth) Faut) emigrated to the United States in 1854, where an uncle lived in New Palestine, Indiana, and whom he made his home.   He continued his studies until he determined to become altogether independent, and engaged himself to a carpenter to learn the trade.   After his apprenticeship was completed he worked at his trade for a while, but aspiring to a higher calling and a better education, he temporarily laid aside his saw and plane to enter FRANKLIN ACADEMY, in Franklin, Indiana. This was in 1859 and he attended school in the winter and returned to his carpenter work in the summer until the spring of 1861, which proved a momentous epoch in his life, as it did in the lives of thousands of other Americans. Frederick served in the Civil War from 1861-1865, earned a Medal of Honor and was injured (loss of hearing) at the Battle of Nashville. FREDERICK W. Fout was a Second Lieutenant, 15th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery. He won the Medal of Honor neaar Harpers Ferry, W. Va... The action which he was awarded the medal of honor was: Voluntarily gathered the men of the battery together, remanned the guns, which had been ordered abandoned by an officer, opened fire, and kept up the same on the enemy until after the surrender. After the civil war he returned home to Germany to see his parents and he formed a tender attachment for a Miss Mathilda Charlotte Brandt,(born 1850), the daughter of his old school master who was a child of four years old when he left Germany.   The young lady reciprocated a visit to the United States and in 1866 came to New York and on August 27th in that city they were married.  After the honeymoon the young couple went to Indianapolis, where Fredrick became interested in the glass manufacturing business.  He and others started a plant in Indianapolis, their plant being at that time the only one in the West.   After a number of years he severed his connection with the glass company, and subsequently engaged in various commercial enterprises, meeting with success and reverses in others.   In 1881 he came to ST. Louis, and for seven years was considered by the Missouri Glass Company one of its most valuable traveling salesman. In St. Louis he was one of the best Pension and Claims attorney's and then also he built homes in St. Louis during the period of 1885-1898. 1. Re: [Germans-STL] Town name question
    2. In my research, in Kreis (County) Minden, there is a Holzhausen and a Holzhausen II, apparently to tell them apart since they are in the same county, so I would think maybe this would be the purpose of this designation. However, Mapblast.com only brings up three Westenfelds, in widely scattered areas of Germany. I would suggest going to Mapblast and noting the locations of all three, then messing around on Google to see if you can come up with anything. It would be just a fishing expedition; you mightnot find a thing. But you should note thelocations of the three Westenfelds on Mapblast and focus your search there. Wiehes married into Schnakes, and I have several on my database, but they were from Hille or Unterluebbe, Kreis Minden, not near any of the Westenfelds. If you would like to see the Wiehes in my database, go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~schnake/html/ and click on Name List and scroll down or use Find to go to the Wiehes. 3. If you try www.expedia.com, go to "find a map", then Europe, then Westenfels, the closest it gets is "Weienfels (second-order administrative division), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany" that may be it. I don't know the importance of the second-order administrative division, but it may be what you are looking for. roy.w.johnson@att.net wrote:In my research, in Kreis (County) Minden, there is a Holzhausen and a Holzhausen II, apparently to tell them apart since they are in the same county, so I would think maybe this would be the purpose of this designation. 1. Bethlehem Lutheran Baptisms 1866-69
    2. Greetings, Everyone! Dave Lossos has just put my latest endeavors on his website at: "Genealogy in St. Louis" <http://genealogyinstlouis.accessgenealogy.com> These baptism were a bit more of a challenge than usual. In addition to the handwriting style the microfilmed pages that I used had shadows at the binding due to the book not being pressed open fully. Thus some birthdates are not visible. Also, please remember to use your imagination with respect to the spelling of your ancestors' names. Look at P and B, C and K, D and T and so on. There are some Washington County, IL names in here that I recognize so you might find some other Illinois goodies in here too. Enjoy! Gloria.
