    3. Hi Maureen, Not sure how long you have been gone from the area, but after Oliver Parks (founder of Parks Air College) passed away, the college became the property of St. Louis University. It was given to SLU along with an endowment to keep it in operation. It became Parks College of St. Louis University. Its emphasis was still on aeronautics and related disciplines. They used the old airport over near the High School (now known as BiState Parks Downtown St. Louis Airport) for flying and meterology lessons. They built a great auditorium on part of the field they used to use for student flying and added a couple of dorms for the guys. About mid term 1997, the Catholic Archdiosese and SLU announced their intentions of closing down the campus the following year saying the tuition collected just did not pay for keeping the facility open. My son in law was a student there at the time. The following year, he and his fellow students had to attend classes on the main campus in St. Louis, driving over to the above airport for classes relating the flying and (in his case) meterology. His class, the Class of 1998, was the final graduating class. The campus was put up for sale. All the buildings are still there. The grounds and buidlings are being maintained and security is present at all times. There have been a number of plans for using this facility (including purchase by Lindenwood College) but they have all been rejected because the Archdiosese will not come down on or even negotiate its asking price. 2. Shanty town? Was this on the levee? Same as Hooverville? $1 an hour was big bucks - I worked part time at Woolworth's after school for 55¢ an hour and was ecstatic at my first paycheck, about $2.50 for the week. I proudly showed it to my father, 2 weeks before he died. Better than 25¢ an hour babysitting, or 10¢ a quart for those dewberries I had to pick and sell on Manchester Lane. We certainly learned the value of earning money. Maureen

    2. Since I was raised in Affton a Bazilion years ago, I have trouble wondering where downtown Affton is/was. All I can remember is that my grandfather never understood why my dad moved way out there. Gosh it was a mile from Hampton & Gravois out there in the sticks. Dad eventually recovered his sanity and we moved back into the City where we could really mingle with the elite. We lived over a tavern on Broadway and Wisconsin. Grandpa didn't like that either, except when he wanted to buy a case of bear at cost, then dad was a good son. Actually the area was great, I delivered groceries in shanty town on Saturday (where the gas tank farm is today). Heck in 1951 I would deliver a $200 order every Saturday to a tar paper shack. Payday was $1 and hour, big bucks then. Living over the Tavern was a bit tough when study time came around. The juke box sort of interrupted. Had to move to the college campus in Cahokia, Ill. The nearest tavern was right next door at the end of the runway. We got our exercise by walking to it and climbing the fence. We were all athletes. 3. Dear Sherry, You're probably right. The St. Louis area weather has been getting more "moderate" over the years. It has really been a number of years since the last time we had a really severely cold winter or a really insufferably hot summer. I took my mentally handicapped niece to the zoo a couple of weekends ago and we actually needed long sleeves for the visit. I'm sure it must be the result of "global warming". 3. I've seen the sign too - for Lemp Lager Beer. If I remember correctly from my Lemp research, it was the Lemps who introduced the lagering process here. This area was especially good for the beer brewing trade because of the many underground caverns that provided ideal temperatures for storing the containers of beer while it aged. Belleville IL also had a number of these early breweries for the same reason. A businessman recently bought a building near the heart of the downtown area. The basement was flooded, and when he had it pumped out he noticed that the walls and flooring resembled some of the pictures of an old brewery that had originally stood in that area. There was also a sealed up entranceway that appeared to go under the street which also led him to believe he had stumbled onto the old brewery. He was planning to open the passageway and allow archaeologists check it out and record their findings. Kay from the Illinois side of the big river. P.S. I live in Illinois but get around a lot in St. Louis and St. Louis County. I didn't realize that Affton had a downtown either. (Just kidding too!)
