Do you know if he was catholic? Check the St. Louis marriage license records to see who performed the marriage. It might tell you the name of the person who performed the marriage and at what church. If not, as long as you have the persons name you can search different indexes to see what church they were at. Then access to your LDS library film collection for that church. This is how I found several of my relatives catholic church marriage records which contained the names of the father and mother of both the bride and groom. Sometimes it will even give the the home town back in Germany where the parents are from. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Spears" <spearspat@hotmail.com> To: <germans-stlouis@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 05, 2010 3:50 PM Subject: [GERMANS-STLOUIS] Louis Kries > > I am looking for information on the parents and birthplace of Ludwig/Louis > Keis/Kreiss/Kries/Kress, my g,g, grandfather. I am looking to verify either a city or a "county" in Germany. I am hoping some of you are good with your geography. My great grandfather and his family are from a town called Sexau in southwestern Germany near Fance. That I am sure of. I have also been told of either a town or county called Emmendingen near Sexau. I have found the city Emmendingen on a map very close to Sexau however I have been told about something called "Landkreis of Emmendingen". What is that? I would also like to make sure that Sexau is in the state of Band-Wurtemburg. I believe it is. Thanks for any help. Jeff REHM

List I sent this to the StL list without cc-ing the German StL list Gary FYI There are no records from Le Havre. LeHavre was used for several reasons. During the early 1850s Hamburg and Bremen were covered with officials who would challenge young men leaving. They were required to have a sponsor in the U.S. and this required them to receive proper court documents. Young men were needed to fight in the Crimean War ('53 - '56). Fear of war (neither Prussia nor any other German state was ever involved) wasn't the only reason to use Le Havre. French railroads actively advertised for those emigrants and successfully petitioned the government to underwrite some of their expenses, thereby making the price very attractive. And obviously, they weren't too particular about paperwork. LeHavre became a real boom town and drew those types that hustled the savings of the less aware. Many stories of misery. If your library is on the internet and will try to order it. If the St. Louis Library will do inter library loan on this book you can look at it yourself if not e-mail the library to the Genealogy section and they can copy the pages you need. Good luck,. Hi, I found this book in the St. Louis public Library: Kruse, Hardeick and related families / compiled and published by Mrs. Dennis Fletcher ( http://www.slpl.org/slpl/gateways/fhhardeick.asp ) The Hardeick mentioned is from Millstadt (his father was born in Versmold, Germany and came by way of the Netherlands to the USA) and is related to me. As I live in the Netherlands there is no way to visit the library in person. Does anyone has this book or know how to get a copy of it? Greetings, Eise van Dijk

I have had great success too with Ancestry, and am amazed at the many cousins I have connected with in the 1.5 years I have had it. I upgraded ~ 8 months ago to the international, as I wanted to find my German and English roots. It is getting better, but they seem to have mostly the more recent records- not the much earlier (1700s- early 1800s) I need. One thing that really drives me crazy with the deluxe is that I get a LOT more totally useless hits on searches. Even when you put in only US places for the search, it still gives lots of out-of-the-US suggestions. This is really a pain for a common name like Lee! (Part of it is just the poor search engine, and they seem to be working on that.) I have kept it though because now I have a few European ancestors & hometowns found, and 2 distant relatives in England. HTH Pamela

I joined World Vital Records several years ago. I joined mainly because of the access to international records. Then in the midst of my pre-paid membership they made it US records only which I did not want or need. Needless to say I was upset - - not that they cared. Also I often found that their links only led to Google books or some other site that I could have found on my own. I am not a fan.
