Dear Listers, I came across the word Tourien, Russia in the Place of Birth for some of the Inhabitants for McPherson County, Kansas. Is this perhaps a Mennonite Colony in Russia, or a village in Volhynia or South Russia? The other interesting thing that I have notice about McPherson County is that largest ethnic population is from Sweden by far. Thanks, Gene Jenkins
That would be TAURIEN, South Russia. It's a larger region, like Cherson. Gene, U may want to do a search on the Internet and see what it yields for such names. One of our fellow researchers has a page with a lil bit of info there too: http://home.t-online.de/home/walter.kolb/russia.htm *** http://home.t-online.de/home/walter.kolb/taurien.htm Additional info in: http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/pub/sources/heimat.txt and http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/refs/link/taurien.txt Hope this helps. ;j. *** also http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~northing/ethnic/eth_german.html which links to Walter Kolb's pages... ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2002 7:10 AM Subject: [GERmanRUSsian] Tourien > Dear Listers, > > I came across the word Tourien, Russia in the Place of Birth for some of > the Inhabitants for McPherson County, Kansas.
