Katherine was born in February of 1888 the daughter of Michael and Magdalena (Knorr) Hoffer of Kassel/Odessa, South Russia. She came to the U.S.A. with her parents in 1906 at tha age of 18. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Her parents homesteaded in the Regent area and she lived at home until she married. She married John Ketterling in Dec. of 1908 at the Kist farm north of Heil, North Dakota. The young couple homesteaded south of Heil, North Dakota. They lived there until 1932 when they moved 1 1/2 miles northwest of Heil. In 1942 they moved into Elgin where she spent most of her remaining years. The past few years she was a resident in the Glen Ullin and Jacobson Memorial Nursing Homes. She passed away at the Jacobson Memorial Care Center the evening of July 28, 1980 at the age of 92 years, 5 months, 27 days. Funeral services were held Friday, August 1, 1980 at Zion Lutheran Church in Elgin with Rev. Donald Schumacher officiating. She was the last living Charter member of the First Zion Lutheran Church Laides Aid. Pallbearers were Al Kramer, Gary Becker, Jerry Imhoff, Wilmer Eslinger, Mark Zimmerman, Lester Becker. All other grandchildren were considered as honorary pallbearers. Interment was made at Zion American Lutheran Cemetery, Elgin, North Dakota. Arrangements were under the guidance of Hertz Brothers Funeral Home, New Leipzig.
