    1. Re: [GERmanRUSsian] Swabian anyone?
    2. http://www.remmick.org/Palatinate/Page1.html In my article about my Remmich German which was spoken in Palainate, I drew up a chart which shows the various connections of the various German dialects. It's half way down the page. Because of the differences, not all Germans understood each other's dialect. [email protected]

    1. [GERmanRUSsian] Anecdote re: Swabian

    3. My 85-year-old Dad is the youngest of nine children, born late in life to Freudentalers Gottlob and Magdalena Bibelheimer Klein. He tells of speaking only German at home in Turtle Lake, N.D., and English at school. The children were expected to help their mother and grandparents learn English. When I was little Dad sometimes sang and joked with us in German. In 1984 when my son was a baby, we had a lovely Danish au pair. When she met my Dad she politely tried to speak to him in German. I didn't understand why he froze up and acted embarrassed. Much later he told me that she was speaking "Alt Deutsch" whereas his family spoke "Low German." He said it was a class thing, and that while he understood her, he would have sounded ignorant or low-class if he had replied!
