    3. Jim, freqently the scripted "S" in older German is misread as an "L".... There are quite a few examples on the StPete Index files as well, e.g.: the children of SAUTER, Friedrich & Maria Widmaier Lauter, Karl 10 Apr 1862 Rosenfeld Lauter, Friedrich 11 Nov 1863 Rosenfeld Lauter, Johannes 00 May 1871 Rosenfeld or SAUTER, Bernhard Lauter, Maria 2 Nov 1870 Paulsthal Bernhard/Christine Ehne? Lauter, Catharina 18 Oct 1871 Paulsthal Bernhard/Christine Ehnis? The reverse <surprisingly> has happened too: e.g. LANDSIEDEL shows as: : Freudental Marriage Sandsiedel, Gottlieb 5 Feb 1876 Freudental Susanne Roth : Odessa (City) Birth Sandsiedel, Jacob 2 Dec 1861 Odessa Friedrich - Heer, Marie 1884084-2 206 103 - from Neuburg el el As to "what was at this site before" i can only speculate that citizens of the mothercolonies , went out and purchased land from [some of] the original landowner[s]... which has been the case for other new colonies i have researched... as well as for some of the more "private" chutors. But i have no details about SACHANSKE / Eigenfeld Btw. nice to see the other name for EIGENFELD in print! There are also some WIDMAYERs in Eigenfeld, around 1880s ; if any connections pop up, please let me know. Hope this helps, Jay W. Luchanske) - the handwritten record is hard to decipher. Sachanske is another name for Eigenfeld just north of Hoffnungstal (Odessa). Eigenfeld started in 1868 as a daughter colony of Hoffnungstal. What would have been at this site 9 years earlier in 1859 when my great great grandparents went there? Is anyone acquainted with the early history of this Eigenfeld? Thanks, Jim Klein
