    3. John was born in September 1887 the son of Martin and Barbara (Stevahn) Ketterling of Kassel, South Russia. John Ketterling was baptized early in infancy. In 1896 he and his parents emigrated to The United States and made their first home in Eureka, South Dakota. Later the family moved to Zeeland, North Dakota. then moved with his parents north of Heil, North Dakota where his parents made their home. He received instruction in the Christian faith and was confirmed at Zeeland area. He left home in 1907 and made homestead three miles south of Heil, North Dakota. He married in December 1908, to Katherine Hoffe at the Kist farm north of Heil. They built a mud and stone house in the spring of 1909 and other buildings, making their home in the Heil area, and in 1942, they moved to Elgin. John suffered of illness since 1946 until his death in January 1950, his age at time of death was 62 years 3 months 15 days. He was a life long member of the Lutheran Church. Pallbearers were; Christ Zimmerman, Christ Dietz, Adam Vilhouse, Martin Koepplin, Fred Eisenbeisz, Henry Laul.
