Funeral services for Walter J. Speidel, 60, San Jose, Calif., were held Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at the Oak Hill Memorial in San Jose with Pastor Royal Speidel (brother) officiating. He died Sept. 15 at his home after a heart attack. Walter was born Jan. 6, 1941 to Gottlieb and Maria (Elhard) Speidel in Wishek. He grew up in Wishek and graduated from Wishek High School in 1959. Walter moved to San Jose in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army in the early 60s at Fort Ord in Monterey, Calif. He attended San Jose State University while working and graduated in 1970. Walter married Marilyn Whipkey in 1965 in San Jose. They had two children. Walt and Marilyns marriage ended in 1988. Survivors include a daughter, Natalie of San Jose; a son, Todd (Sarah) Speidel of Tacoma, Wash.; two grandchildren; a sister Iona Speidel (Norm) Bauer of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Rev. Royal (Rita) Speidel of Bollingbrook, Ill; and a sister-in-law, Delores Speidel of Milwaukee, Wisc. Walter also is survived by his loving companion of 12 years, Norma Reynolds of San Jose, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts. Walter was preceded in death by his father, Gottlieb; his mother, Maria; and a brother, Larry. Walters body was cremated at the Oak Hill Memorial in San Jose.
