Funeral services for Harold A. Wiest, 66, of Warner, S.D. and formerly of Seneca, S.D., were held Tuesday. Sept. 18, 2001, at Faith United Methodist Church, Aberdeen, S.D. He died of cancer Sept. 14 at his home. Harold was born Dec. 17, 1934, on the family farm near Zeeland, the son of Albert and Margaret (Hochhalter) Wiest. He was raised and educated in the Zeeland area. Harold married Arlene Guthmiller on March 29, 1956, in Ashley. They moved to Seneca in 1960 and began ranching and farming in the area, continuing until they retired. They moved to Warner in 1995. Harold was a member of the Seneca United Methodist Church and the Faith United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Seneca Oddfellows Lodge and a leader of the Seneca Westside 4-H Club. Survivors include his wife, Arlene Wiest of Warner; two daughters, Dorothy (Gerald) Barondeau of Wecota, S.D., and Deborah (Daniel) Mitchell of Aberdeen; three sons, David (Rolayne) Wiest of Pierre, S.D., Darrel (Darla) Wiest of Napa, Calif., and Daniel (Valerie) Wiest of Peoria, Ill.; three sisters, Viola Bettenhausen* and Ione Bettenhausen**, both of Wishek, and Priscilla Grenz of Selby, S.D.; eight grandchildren; and special family friends, Lisa, Bobby and Peter Chin of South Pasadena, Calif. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Casketbearers were Roger Bettenhausen, Jerry Bettenhausen, Larry Grenz, Jeffery Greger, Ryan Nelson and Robert Seaton. They were married on December 16, 1945, in the Reformed Church near Zeeland. Mrs. Bettenhausen is the former Viola Wiest. Charles and Viola are the parents of five children: Mrs. Herman (Bernice) Kauk, living near Wishek, Roger, married to the former Joyce Schuchard and living in Wishek; and Steven, LeRoy and Susan, at home with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Bettenhausen are members of the First Baptist Church and live on the family farm, eleven miles southwest of Wishek. ** Mr. and Mrs. CHRIST BETTENHAUSEN Both Christ and Ione are natives of the Wishek area. Christ is the son of William Bettenhausen and his wife, Albina, nee Kramer, and was born October 20, 1920. Ione is the daughter of Albert Wiest and his wife Margaret, nee Hochhalter. They were married on October 6, 1937, and began their wedded life on the home place, nine miles southwest of Wishek. Christ and lone are the parents of seven children, one of whom passed away. The six living children are: Mrs. Dwight (Judy) Delzer and Mrs. Curtis (Peggy) Melby, both living at Fessenden, North Dakota; Thomas, a freshman at N.D.S.U. in Fargo, Jerry, a senior at Wishek High School; Tammie in the eighth grade; and Kris, a fourth grader. The Bettenhausens are members of the St. John Congregational Church of Wishek.
