Jim, Thanks for your reply. You are close, but the villages I mentioned are east of the Tiligul. A good detailed map is at http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/EART/x-ussr/100k/L-36-039.jpg . Click on the map to zoom in, and go to the right hand side, about half way down. There you will see the villages Berezanka, Krasnoe, and Vasylivka (in cyrillic), and the name of the stream as "Cocuk", as far as I can tell. I don't know what it means, but I did find the word on the Net somewhere as Arabic for "follower of a spiritual path" or "follower of God". It also appears to be a Turkish word. I would like to know what it means in Russian, and if the river still has the same name. It appears to be an intermittent stream rather than a continuously flowing river.
