    3. Definately more information in the "Village Accounts" than in published obits. I do recall < working from memory > that often in the , i think, Kirchbote obits it was hard to tell where the person actual "softly slept in"... It may also have been in the messages that appeared in the "Volk auf dem Weg".[VadW] Of course those are fairly recent. < NONE pre-WW-II >. The GRHS centre in Bismarck has a large collection of obits on hand from all sorts of sources. Including these Kirchbote and VadW obits. They are sorted / kept by family name. Worthwhile researching! I'm sure ASHGR in Lincoln also has plenty of Obits. Some files which you may want to "visit & peruse" are; Obituaries from Der Staats Anzeiger, as follows Der Staats Anzeiger, 1928-1929 & 1932-1935 : http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/link/schurr1.txt Der Staats Anzeiger, 1935-1937 . . . . . . . : http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/link/schurr2.txt Der Staats Anzeiger, 1956-1957 . . . . . . . : http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/link/schurr3.txt Der Staats Anzeiger, 1931-1932 . . . . . . . : http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/link/schurr4.txt Der Staats Anzeiger, 1939 - 1940 (A. Schurr) : http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/link/schurr5.txt as well as: Obituaries from the Napoleon Homestead (A. Schurr) . . . . .: http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/link/napolob.txt Obituaries from the Eureka Post, 1902-1906 (A. Schurr): http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/link/epost.txt Alvina Schurr, Victoria BC, Canada , did a great job indexing these. There are also some , not to many, in http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/link/sadn.txt ; Staatsanzeiger Death Notices, 1907-1919 (M. Rempfer) and a few more in http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/link/hrobits.txt ; Dakota Freie Presse Obituary Index There are other obit indexes as well, for a full list check out http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/obits/ I don't know offhand where the obits are that Curt mentioned. Hope this helps, ;j. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2001 5:52 PM Subject: [GERmanRUSsian] Re: Obituaries/Death Notices from Old Country to US To answer your question concerning death notices of individuals in Russia being posted in old Dakota newspapers, quite often there will be mention of an individual who has died in the village correspondence published in the newspaper. Sometimes their age will be included, sometime just the name is given. An actual obit for someone in Russia is extremely rare. I have been extracting published letters from the "old" country for several years and have appoximately 400 in my collection. These only pertain to my 4 ancestral villages of Alt Danzig, Neu Danzig, Güldendorf and Hoffnungstal-Bessarabia.
