Hello, I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions. My great grandfather was born in 1893 in the village of Huck. He has always told my grandmother that he was adopted as a baby. His name is Jacob Jacoby and I have several documents showing his fathers name as Conrad Jacoby. >From what I have read about Huck and other villages I'm guessing it was probably not an adoption as I know it in present time. Was it common for the children to be taken in by family as opposed to an orphanage? If he was taken in as a baby does that mean his real last name is probably not Jacoby nor is his real father Conrad? I have hit a brickwall and I'm starting to wonder if this may be the reason. I would assume an adopted child would not be on a Pleve chart for the adoptive family... what about the biological family? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Marcie (Jacoby, Ault)

Many times I'd miss parts of the stories because it all had to be translated into English since I knew just a few words of German.... I remember the old timers laughing and my grandfather or my parents would say, "I can't translate it, dear, it's just not funny in English." So, here I am, 61 years old and, now, I'm the old timer telling the stories. But at my fingertips are computer keys and the internet ........... my web sites are filled with all kinds of stories, history, photographs and maps. I couldn't tell you the amount of hours spent or add up the cost, however, to me, it's been worth it. Friends, I took the original photo (4.75" * 6.8") of St. Paul�s Lutheran church, Odessa to Office Depot and copied it on 4 sheets of 11*17 paper, using their best machine, which is kept behind the desk. Even at that magnification, the picture is remarkably clear. I could finally see that the words on the announcement board under the pulpit were not in Russian, as I originally thought, but in German. When I got home, I laid out the four pieces to form the picture (44" * 68") and, all of a sudden, the words jumped out at me. Although still a little blurry (I think caused by reflected lighting) the writing is mostly legible: 100 Jahre 18xx-19xx Eine feste Burg ist unser Gott where x represents numbers that are too blurry to be discernible. The letter �s� in �feste� and �unser� is in the old style form, which looks like a letter �f� without the cross stroke. Translated: 100 years 18xx-19xx A mighty fortress is our Lord (hymn composed by Martin Luther) This indicates to me that the photo was taken to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Lutheran community in Odessa. I haven�t yet verified the exact year: does anyone happen to know? I have rescanned the original photo of St Paul�s at 1200 Resolution. (The previous resolution was 600.) It is a humongous file (17,459KB!) But the quality is noticeably superior. Let me know if you�d like me to send it to you off the list. Other interesting things that are clearer in this version, especially when you zoom in: - Pictures of churches displayed on either side of the centre aisle. The one on the left looks as if it might be the previous building. I just learned that part of my LANDSIEDEL family moved to Argentina from Johannestal, South Russia. I have never done any research in that area before. Does anyone on the list have any experience? I have a family photo of him, possibly taken in the 1940's. This is what I know: Name: Andreas/Andrew Landsiedel DOB: 25 Aug 1884 in Johannestal, Cherson, Odessa, South Russia Parents: Christian Landsiedel (b. 16 May 1863) and Maria Kezan (born about 1855) Maria was first married to Christian's older half brother Johannes - he died in 1881. I don't have dates of death for Christian and Maria..is it possible they moved to South America with their son Andreas? The name could possible be spelled LANDSEADAL as well, as other family members that went onto Colorado and California use this spelling. Kathy in Michigan

There are a group of us working on a new genealogy book for the German Russian family of Huether. I believe we have most of the older information but there is always more people in the here and now realm. I was wondering if I could get people to check there data bases and see if they have any Huether's. Many Huethers settled in the Dakotas and Canada. Click on the map to zoom in, and go to the right hand side, about half way down. There you will see the villages Berezanka, Krasnoe, and Vasylivka (in cyrillic), and the name of the stream as "Cocuk", as far as I can tell. I don't know what it means, but I did find the word on the Net somewhere as Arabic for "follower of a spiritual path" or "follower of God". It also appears to be a Turkish word. I would like to know what it means in Russian, and if the river still has the same name. It appears to be an intermittent stream rather than a continuously flowing river.
