    3. When U wrote that their names were changed at Ellis Island, i assume U meant that they were changed from the manifest versions. Their names were sometimes already written as STEVAHN in S.Russia... The St. Pete records will bear this out. What is interesting is that the spelling variants seem to be tied to the socalled "decade" files... When spelling variants slip in it is sometimes hard to determine the reason. Was it the scribe at the church office? Or was it a member of the "tribe" who had a "better" idea... Or did it happen later < from microfilm to database >? It helps of course when a name is based on known German words to figure out what the name should be / could be... For instance one can see BUCKFINK in the St. Pete records... which is an unlikely variant. Most likely the transcribers had trouble with the name BUCHFINK and scribbled it down as Buck-fink ... A BUCH is a "beechtree". So the name means Beech-finch. From: JACOB STEVAHN : My family line is Gottfried & Christina "Lang" Stephan; Andreas & Karolina "Reich" Stephan; Johann & Elizabtha "Frey" Stephan; Michael & Barbara "Imhoff" Stevahn; Jacob & Olga "Martell" Stevahn and me Jacob Jr. Stevahn. ----- Original Message ----- From: JACOB STEVHAN To: JM_on_GR_G Sent: Sunday, August 15, 2004 12:17 PM Subject: Re: Stevahn family roots Jay Thank you for the help, I will give it a try. Here is some information I have at this time. Again thank you ................................. My Grandparents when coming to the USA was listed as "Stefan" on the manifest, and his brother and his wife was listed as "Stephan". Both their names were changes at Ellis Island to Stevahn, (however I'm not sure that is when the change took place). I hope this will help and that I have answered you're question. 3. Has anyone else run into problems while using the Ellis Island online records? Let me explain the reason for my question: i have located some names i'm interested in on the www.ellisislandrecords.org/ database... After locating the individual details, i then find that i can not seem to get the correct MANIFEST... For instance i have located some passengers on the SPREE. When i ask for the SPREE manifest, i get a manifest for the NORGE... Has anyone else experienced this? And better yet, have U found a solution??? Eager to hear... Jay

    3. Hello Ginny + List members, I did a quick look-up on my copy of GRANDMA 4.0 ( Mennonite Genealogy Database) I found Sara Doell and Klaas Dick. He is listed as Dick but his father is listed as Klaas Dueck. Her source is the: 1880 Village Census of the Mennonite West Reserve, edited by John Dyck and William Harms (Winnipeg: Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society, 1998). You could also try the online resource Mennonite Genealogy Data Index, Canada, Manitoba. Here is the address: http://www.mennonites.ca/canada_mb.html If you would like I could check the other names. Here is some information I have at this time. Again thank you The information I have is from the publication; "The Emigration from Germany to Russia in the years 1763 to 1862" by Karl Stumpp. With additional information from the Odessa Library web site Gluckstal Colonies Births, Marriages, and Death 1833 to 1900. With additional information from Harold Ehrman web site and GCRA publication which is a copy or the original book placed on the Odessa Library web site (not sure about that). My G-G-Great Grandfather Gottfried Stephan believed born in the 1700's at Wielkie Jeziorke Hohensalza, Poland; married Christina Lang born July 18, 1768 in Posen Prussia, Poland, died July 18, 1854 in Kassel, South Russia. They emigrated in 1814 from Posen to Kassel, South Russia in 1814. They had 4 children; Michael b: 1801; Rosina b: 1802; Karolina b: 1805 and my G-Great Grandfather Andreas b: Nov. 26, 1808 at Geschorki or Geschoeka, Poland. He married Karlina Reich July 28, 1840 in Gluecstal, South Russia. All the children where born in Poland, or Prussia which ever seems right. I prefer to use the place location at the time of berth, death, or marriage, to which I am not sure if that is the right thing to do. 3. A companion list is available to the GermanRussian* list at Rootsweb.com See http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Obituaries/GR-OBITS.html Since this will provide a dedicated obits list, subscribers on GermanRussian are requested to not post obits here any longer, unless they involve a discussion, or question on same obit. < This should make some subscribers, who have indicated that they would prefer to not see obits on this (GermanRussian) list, happy. > Of course any discussion or follow-up on an obit is still most welcome here... I would encourage everyone to subscribe to GR-Obits, either in digest mode < which will "bundle" messages > , or in simple mail mode < which is one message at a time > . Perhaps we can see a reposting of GR obits on the new list as well. One assumes this will take a wee bit of time. But a second look has never hurt before. Happy roots rooting, List Keeper * See http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/RUS/GermanRussian.html
