    3. Hi all, This past summer, after five years of looking, I finally found my relatives who are now living in Germany. It was an emotional and joyful reunion. They were very excited about all the research I had done. One of the highlights was seeing pictures of my great grandparents in the 1890's as well as hearing stories about their lives in Ukraine. In the area around Dnepropetrowsk, I'm researching the villages of: JAMBURG, MARIENTAL, KATHARINENHOF, SERAFIMOWKA, SOLENOJE Surnames: BLEICHER, KLASS, SCHUBERT, BLANK, DONHAUSER, EIGENSEER, ILLENSEER, GOLDOFF, HARTMANN, KALTEIS, MEIER, LAUTENSCHLAGER, ZEIGER, ZINN Peter Oleskevich Burlington, Ontario peter.nancy@cogeco.ca

    3. Good idea. I am researching Hellmann's from: Morlheim, southwestern Germany prior to 1789; then Karlsruhe, Russia from 1810 -; and finally Woronesh, Russia in the early 1900s. We lost contact with relatives during WWII and don't know where to look now but grandfather has listed Woronesh as his home on Ellis Island records. Thanks Bev

    3. "Freydental" may be how some folks have written a placename they found hard to pronounce... but i think we will have to look for Freudental / Freudenthal I have see it as Freidental as well...*** The spelling -thal is "older" than -tal, and we can see it across the entire range of placenames that end in either. 3. AND we see it in textual information* that introduces people to other files... : "" We will also find that there are people from many places other than where they were living in 1940. We can note in the Bessarabian films, that there are many families from the Odessa area of Grossliebental, Alexanderhilf, >>> Neuberg, <<< Worms, and the Glueckstal colonies. There will also be a few from Rohrbach, Peterstal, Freudental, etc. "" which is very unfortunate... J. 3. Yes i have seen damage by hoppers... and have also skidded on the TransCanada highway by Moosejaw, when it was covered with those fat green insects after they had gorged themselves elsewhere... The road was slicker than a waterslide that was greased with butter... My windshield was a mess too! And to think that the Royal Canadian Airforce used do flight training from a field in Moosejaw... A buddy of mine was stationed there... As an aside... i don't think that GRs brought the methods described below along to Canada to fight hopper infestions... Or??? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Klein" <kleiji@wwc.edu> To: <GR-HERITAGE@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU> Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 2004 11:02 PM Subject: Re: [GR-HERITAGE] Pest control... > On page 136 of Joseph Heights' "Homesteaders on the Steppe", there is a > reproduction of an 1838 woodcut by Kohl showing peoples' response to a > locust invasion near Odessa in 1828 and 1829. 3. As before: Unfortunately a lot of records have been transcribed with Neuberg instead of Neuburg as the placename. The place was actually Neuburg, and to the best of my knowledge there was no Neuberg in S.Russia. Lets we think this is only in the St. Pete records, here is more of the sort of confusion we see: Schoch, Johanna Christiana 21 Oct 1791 Neuberg/Wuerttemberg 1476493 3176/84 ahnentafel Schoech, Johanna Christiana 21 Oct 1791 Nauburg Neuburg Brackenheim 1476493 2010 marriage record Schoech, Johanna Christina 21 Oct 1791 Neuburg 1476492 1716 ahnentafel Schoech, Johanna Christine 21 Oct 1791 Neuberg/Wuerttemberg 1476492 202 familien buch Schoech, Johanna Christine 21 Oct 1791 Neuberg 1476493 2494 ahnentafel { per Christian FIESS Files Supplemental Index M - Z } So PLEASE be aware! 3. Unfortunately a lot of records have been transcribed with Neuberg instead of Neuburg as the placename. The placename is actually Neuburg, and to the best of my knowledge there was no Neuberg in S.Russia. Nor for that matter was there a Neuberg in Wuerttemberg. There was only one in Hessen. So please be sure to record the correct name in any derivative work. Below is a list of the errors on the St.Pete online files; rest assured there are plenty of other places where this placename has been recorded incorrectly. And where it has been propagated in error. Already in 1382 do we find mention of the Rittergeschlechts Thumb von Neuburg... in the history of Schwaben[-land]. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ERRORS: Search of St. Petersburg Archive Extractions for the query "Neuberg" Bessarabian Village Birth Records, 185x Binder, Catharina Christina 12 Nov 1852 Lichtental Heinrich Schreiber, Christina 1883185/1 151 28 from Neuberg Binder, Ludwig 27 Oct 1853 Lichtenthal Heinrich Schrieber, Christina 1883188/1 140 26 Neuberg Maile, 11 Jan 1853 Lichtenthal Friedrich Schaufelberger, Dorothea 1883188/1 138 2 from Neuberg, stillborn Schumann, Caroline Henriette 23 Apr 1861 Katzbach Carl Ferdinand Neuberg?, Wilhelmina 1884084/2 459 13 Bessarabian Village Death Records, 185x Bauer, Friedrich 20 Apr 1850 Teplitz Friedrich 1882651/3 172 7 Neuberg colonist Klein, Michael 3 Sep 1853 Friedenthal 1883188/2 192 20 ? 3. Hi. :) Nice mailing list. I'm curious about my great-great grandfather, Joseph LEIKER. He emigrated from OBERMUNJOR Russia on 20 July 1876 and was one of the founders of MUNJOR, Kansas. I noticed on one website that the 1798 census of Obermunjor mentions the surname of Leiker.
