That Last Yager William Yager Grove aka William Yager Groves William Yager Grove, was born on August 5th, 1905, in Clifton Forge,Virginia. He was the oldish son of, Barbara Elizabeth Yager, of Rockingham County, Va. And David Isaac Marksvillus Grove, of Marksville, in Page County, in Virginia. He was the great, great, great, grandson of, Philemon Yager, of his mother's, Rockingham County, family. Also at the time, of his birth, he was the grandson of, Martha Gertrude "Strickler" Grove, Deavers, of Marksville, Va.. She did not live, to see his birth, she die in 1901, at the age of 45, of unknown causes. He was the last, to have the, Yager name, as any part of his own family name, in any form. On May 14th, 1919, he enlisteded in the, U.S. Navy, at Hamptom Roads, in Virginia. At the time of his enlistment, he was just 16 years old. At this young age, his father, had to sign for, his enlistment, into the service. He serve with the, U.S. Navy, on peace duty, in Europe, at the end of, World War 1. He also serve, in both Asia, and South America, on various, U.S. Naval ships. At the end of his naval service, he left, his Virginia home. And moved up north, to the city of, Philadelphia, Pa.! It was at this time, that for reasons known, only to him. He added the "s", to his last name, change it, from Grove, his father name, to Groves, his new name. It was also at this time, that he met, and later marry, Ellen "Helen" Walsh. She was born on, August 4th, 1904, in Castlebar, County Mayo Ireland. They were married on, June 19th 1928, in Philadelphia. There marriage lasted 40 years, through more bad times, and bad years, then good ones. But in all of those, 40 years! To my knowledge, he never once, return to his Virginia home, or Family. At the time of his death, on September 27th, 1969, he was 64, years old. The cause of his death, was due to, "Pulmonary Emphysema". He was survived by his three older sisters, who at the time, still live in Clifton Forge, Va.. There names were, Miss. Rena Gertrude Grove, born October 19th, 1904, Mrs. Nell Grove Baugher, born October 15th, 1906, and Virginia Grove Janney, born May 6th, 1909. He was also survived by his wife, Helen "Ellen" Walsh Groves, his wife of 40 years. And by his, four children, two sons, two daughters! There names were, Dorothy Groves Ford, William James Groves, Eleanor Groves Thompson, and Raymond John Groves. He was also survived by, 10 grand children, and later, great grand children. William "Yager" Groves, rest in final peace at, Fernwood Cemetery, in Lansdowne Pa., just outside of, Philadelphia.
