DNA does not replace good old fashion genealogy research. A DNA test is more likely to tell you who you are not related to. Never order more than the 12 Marker Y-chromosome test. If you do not match any one with that test, having more markers test will not find a match. In my Morris Surname DNA Project people increase the number of markers only when they do match someone with the 12 Marker test and they want to narrow the link down. I have 99 Morris men in the Morris Project and we have 59 unique Y-haplotypes. These are all family that believe they were in Americas before 1776. The y-chromosome does not change rapidly enough for any of these men to really be related when their 12 Marker shows no relationship. About 54 of these men had no match. The haplotypes with the most matches have someone who is out scouting for likely candidates to be tested. When members choose the 25-marker test the match ratio fell from 45:99 to 24:76. Some of these men then had the 37 marker performed and the number of matches fell to 14:62. The most markers Family Tree DNA does are 67 markers and 22 men elected that test with only two matches (2:22). Corlee Ann Morris Germanna Descendant and Morris Surname Project Administrator
