Have been checking out several of the web sites given as sources for SniderSnyders etc.. I have several questions/problems with these. lst Martha Stigler who is given as the wife of Michael Snider/Snyder son of John etc..2nd colony etc.. She is not my ancestor but her father is given as Samuel Stigler of Culpeper Co. VA. Samuel Stigler is my ancestor. Samuel Stigler with 400 ac near Piney Mt. in Culpeper is lst found in Nelson Co., VA ( now KY ) in the tithables list in 1787. He died there in 1800 with a will that list his children. Mary/Martha did not marry a Snider she m a Rawson. In the full account of the will he names James Brown his exec. The reading of the entire will Samuel states "my son-in-law" James Brown. James Brown m Sally Stigler dau of Samuel. He was the son of Thomas Brown , will Culpeper Co. VA 1786: "wills Culpeper Co. VA will book C, p 220/221/222; 29 Oct 1786/ probate 15 Jan 1786 (have copy of actual will and these are the dates.. the transcriber meant to give 1787 as the probate date?) Thomas in the above will states: "To my son James Brown: 2 young Negroes, *Ruben that he has already in possession* of & Harry" The tithables lists of Nelson Co. VA (KY) give Rubin as the black listed as a tith of James Brown. James Brown is found on 1785 tithable list with a black male and black female. In 1786 he has two tithes.. he and "*Rubin *(Negro) " James Brown, Samuel Stigler, John Snider/Snyder all are living in the western part of Nelson Co., VA (KY) by 1787 according to the tithable lists. (All three, my ancestors) Samuel Stigler in his will written 22 March 1800 Nelson Co., KY, p 393 "To wife Sarah her lawful part. To son Benjamin, the plantation where I live. To daughter Gilly land in Hardin Co, feather bed and furniture. To dau Mary Rawson L5. Rest of estate to be divided a share to each. To: Sally Brown, Patty Snyder, Charlotte Eldridge, Nancy Dorsey,. Benjamin Stigler, and the children of my daughter Lane Furman. "Abstracts of Wills 1785-1820 Book 1 A-D, Nelson Co., KY. p 18" (I have a full copy of the original will) As to whether the John Snyder listed with these two men is the John Snyder who named three sons in his will, Adam, Michael and Adam. I cannot definitely prove. but.... John Snyder appears on the tithable lists in 1786 again living in the same area as Samuel Stigler and James Brown. His brother Adam Snyder settled in Jefferson Co. KY which is just north of Nelson. Back to Samuel Stigler. He married 3 times. 1st to Sarah 2nd to Ann Wortham @ 1774 3rd Sarah Martin 1787 Nelson Co. VA (KY) First wife Sarah is listed in the King George Co., VA ct record where Samuel and wife Sarah are selling his 63 ac in King George Co. that his father gave him. Deed Book 1, p 522-523 " Indenture lst day of Feb 1764 between James Stigler an Martha his wife of King George Co., of one part and Samuel Stigler eldest son of said James Stiglar and Martha. ... for natural love and affection have granted Samuel Stigler on plantation and 60 ac of land being the upper part which James Stiglar holds, ad joying Joseph Harrison, Robt Pect and Capt Joseph Strother... gift of deed 5 April 1764" By Sarah he had the following: Mary , Sally, Patty, Charlotte, and Jane Married 2nd Ann Wortham and had: Nancy, Benjamin and Gilly Ann Wortham had been married before to Samuel Wortham and had 4 children the last two were Charles and Lucy. "Abstracts of Wills 1785-1820" , p 12 (Nelson Co. Will Bk one, p 156) "The accounts of Samuel Stiglor, in maintence of Lucy Wortham and Charles Wortham orphans of Saml. Wortham from 1774-1784." Married 3rd to Sarah Martin 1787 Nelson Co., KY. No children Maybe this will clear up a few records. Mary Ann Shoemaker
