I'm at work so I don't have a bibliography of sources to submit with my response, but I believe that you'll find that your sources have confused several key relationships in the cluster of families and individuals you are trying to sort out. There were a series of articles published over a period of several years in the Virginia Genealogist (edited and published by John Frederick Dorman, who is also a Slaughter descendant), so that would be a good place to start. There's also a fine article on the Towneley/Warner (and Smith) kin-network that is key to determining the relationships between these families. I'll try to remember to look it up at home, and post it tomorrow. Anyway, I think you'll find that while Mary Smith (wife of Col. Robert Slaughter, Jr.) was indeed the daughter of Augustine Smith (I think he's actually a Major, like his father), we don't really know who her mother was. I've seen the name Mary Carver mentioned (although some secondary sources, if I remember correctly) have also floated that name for Maj. Lawrence Smith's wife (i.e. Augustine Smith's mother). Usually, however, Augustine Smith's wife is identified as a Susannah (maiden name unknown). Augustine Smith, was indeed the son of Maj. Lawrence Smith, but his mother (and as far as I know Lawrence Smith's only wife) was Mary Debnam, daughter of William and Catherine Debnam. Mrs. Catherine (or Katherine, I've seen it spelled both ways) Debnam married Rev. Charles Grymes, after the death of William Debnam, and they are the ancestors of the very prominent Grymes family that intermarried with the Lee (Robert E. is a descendant), Page, and other elite Tidewater families. Major Lawrence Smith was the son of Christopher Smith and Elizabeth Towneley (widow of a Halstead). Elizabeth Towneley Halstead Smith's sister, Mary Towneley, was the wife of Augustine Warner, Sr. Their son, Augstine Warner, Jr. was married to Mildred Reade (if I remember correctly), and George Washington is among their descendants (so it's easy enough to verify the Warner/Towneley and Warner/Reade marriages). You didn't raise the issue, but once you begin to research the families, you'll find that Col. Robert Slaughter, husband of Mary Smith, was the son of Frances Jones, and the grandson of Col. Cadwallader Jones and, in all probability, Catherine/Katherine Debnam, widow of Robert Taliaferro, and daughter of William and Catherine/Katherine (N.) Debnam. Hope this helps. Augustine Warner is listed p 344 Early Virginia Immigrants By George Cabell Greer, Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1982 I am looking for the Augustine Warner that had Mary Warner married to Lawrence Smith and had Augustine Smith married to Mary Carver. A land record was originally published in "Virginia County Records-Spotsylvania County, 1721-1800, Vol.1 edited by William Armstrong Crozier. 2 April 1723. This refers to Augustine Esq. Warner 2 April 1723. It mentions Larkin Chew of Spts. Co. to Samuel Loyd adjoining the land of Augt. Smith of Gloucester Co., formerly the land of Augustine Warner. I believe Augustine Warner, father of Mary Warner married to Lawrence Smith belongs to me. I do not have any information on Augustine Warner other than the Immigrant List. Jeff, Would this be the SLAUGHTER family that is associated with the WITCHER family? Mary C. Witcher, Nov 10, 1826, Georgia, married William E. Slaughter, Sr. on May 01, 1851 in Carroll County, Georgia. Mary is my 2nd cousin 4 times removed... ~don -----Original Message----- From: germanna_colonies-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germanna_colonies-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Duvall, Jeffery A Sent: Monday, February 16, 2009 12:54 PM To: 'germanna_colonies@rootsweb.com' Subject: Re: [GERMANNA] Wife of Augustine Warner immigrant 1635 Jeff Duvall (descended from Col. Don, It's possible, but would require a fair amount of research to determine, one way or the other. I don't know that anyone has ever published a in-depth history of the Virginia Slaughters (i.e., the descendants of Robert and Frances Jones Slaughter), although I know from private correspondence with Mr. Dorman he once considered such a project.
