    1. Re: [GERMANNA] Utterbachs in First Colony?
    2. Craig, You will need to refer to the following sources that indicate that Hermann/Harman Otterbach emigrated to Virginia with his wife and family: From, Ortisgeschichte Trupbach by Dieter Trops and Udo Bohn, published by Herausgegeen vom Heimatverein Trupbach, Siegen-Trupbach, 1989, there is a history of many of the homes in Trupbach, one of which is the Otterbach house "Welmes." On pg 211 for the history of "Welmes", it states that Hermannus Otterbach lived here in 1707, but that he went to Virginia--"ausgewandert nach Virginia" and that the next occupant of the house was Johann Jacob Schneider in 1712. From, The Story of Germanna Descendants in Reunion at Siegen Forest Virginia, 1960, by BC Holtzclaw: Pg. 22 "Of the 12 men who petitioned for land in 1724, only 5 were married in Germany as far as the records show, namely, Cuntze (to his first wife Anna Gertrud), Hitt, Holtzclaw, Rector and Spilman. Tillman Weaver, who was a boy in 1714, maried much later Ann Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Joseph Cuntze. The remaining 6 men seem to have been bachelors when they left Germany in 1713, namely, Melchior Brumback (aged only 18 in 1713), John Fishback (ged 22), Harman Fishback (aged 20), John Huffman (aged 21), John Kemper (aged 21), John Joseph Martin (aged 22). Of these 6 men, we now that John Fishback must have married Agnes Haeger probably about 1714-15, as his eldst child was born in 1716. John Kemper married Alice Katherine Otterbach, daughter of Hermann Otterbach, and that marrieage, too, probably occurred in Virginia about 1715, as their eldest child was born in 1717. As to John Huffman, we now from his family bible that he did not marry his wife, Katherine Haeger, until 1721. The maiden names of the wives of the remaining three men, Melchior Brumbach, Harman Fishback, and JohnJoseph Martn, remain unknown; yet in the 1724 affidavits, they all state that their wives arrived in Virginia in April, 1714. If the family, not only of Philip Fishback, but also of Hermann Otterbach, came over in 1714, it would account plausibly for these three wives as follows: Philip Fishback had two daughers named Mary Elizabeth, one born in 1687, the second in 1696. The first married Jacob Rector in Germany in 1711. The second seems probably identical with Elizabeth, wife of Melchior Brumbach of the 1724 record. Besides Anna Margaret, wife of Jacob Holtzclaw, and Alice Katherine, wife of John Kemper, Hermann Otterbach had two other daughters, Mary Katherine (b. 1699) and Anna Katherine (b. 1705). The former looks as though she was Mary Katherine, wife of John Joseph Martin, of the 1724 record. The latter could have been Katherine, wife of Harman Fishback, probably just married in 1724.. The coincidence of the names of the above wives with the names of daughters of Philip Fishback and Hermann Otterbach, certainly indicates that these two older men came over in 1714 with their children and sons-in-law; and that several of their daughters did not marry until several years after coming to Virginia." BC Holtzclaw's, Ancestry and Descendants of the Nassau-Siegen Immigrants to Virginia 1714-1750, the section on the Otterbach/Utterback Family: Pg. 482 "We have indicated that Hermann Otterbach and all his family emigrated to Virginia in 1714. This is in accordance with tradition, and fits in with the facts. Hermann Otterbach, his wife, and his two sons, however, all seem to have died early in Virginia, perhaps before the 1714 group moved to Germantown about 1719."**See the information below Pg. 489 "Professor William I. Utterback, Marshall College, Huntington, W. Va., published in 1938 "The Utterback Family, 1620-1938" an excellent genealogy of the Utterback family. However, there seems to me to be some need for corrections in his account of the first four generations of the family. He traced all the Virginia Utterbacks back to Harman Utterback, the 1714 imigrant, through his sons John Philip and John, while it seems to me that the evidence we have shows that they were all descended from Harman Utterback's nephew and great-nephew, the two Henry Utterbacks who came over in 1734. As indicated in previous chapters, it seems highly probable that Harman*(Hermann) Utterback came over in 1714 with his sons-in-law, Jacob Holtzclaw and John Kemper, as did his contemporary, Philip Fishback. This view is confirmed by the early tradition in the Kemper genealogy that Harman Utterbach was a member of the 1714 group, by the fact that there is no record of his family in the Siegen church books after that date, and that unless he came to Virginia in 1714, it seems impossible to find wives for John Joseph Martin and Harman Fishback, and a second wife for Peter Hitt young enough to have been the mother of his children. As indicated previously, all these wives are proved to have immigrated in 1714, and their names correspond to those of Harman Utterback's daughters." I wish that there were some documents proving the immigration of Hermann Otterbach, but there aren't other than the fact that he, or his family, does not appear in any of the church records in Trupbach again. And, as BC points out, there are not enough wives for the men of the First Colony without the Otterbach girls. There are also no records for Philip Fishbac or for John Henry Weaver, the father of Tilman Weaver. One piece of documentation that would help us greatly would be to obtain the letters of permission that were probably obtained by all of the immigrants prior to their immigration to Virginia. Possibly the only one of them that didn't obtain permission was Pastor Haeger as his predecessor, Knabeschu(spelling wrong!), indicated that Pastor Haeger left in the night or in the early morning. He is not named in any land record of the 1st colony at Germantown in what is now Fauquier County. Surely I am missing something. I suppose we can PERHAPS forgive the inclusion of Rev. Hager and Joseph Albrecht on this list, though neither of them are mentioned in the land records either. But Utterbach? I am UTTERLY confused on this one.
