John: Thank you for the explanation on the mtDNA. I'm sorry, but I don't have a good answer for your question regarding what is happening with the FLESHMAN family. Since the passing of Dr. John MONTGOMERY (family secretary for over 75 years), things seem to have come to a standstill. There hasn't even been the nice reunions we used to have in Lewisburg, WV. I believe that Richard BLAKE is still the family secretary and, perhaps, he can answer your question. I am still researching the FLESHMAN family and would appreciate any contacts from descendants of the group. We do plan on being at Pipestem State Park, south of Beckley, WV, June 19-21, for the biannual reunion of the VANDAL family. My third greatgrandfather (son of Jacob ALTHAR/ALTHAIR and Susannah FLESHMAN) married Jemima VANDAL, whose father, Abraham VANDAL, originally founded the town of Vandalia, which became Fayetteville, WV. Is there something special going on at the Germanna Reunion, this year, concerning the FLESHMANs? Linda Linda, Essentially, the mitochondrial information of a women is passed to all of her children. Her daughter would have the same information. Then her daughter would have the same info and so. Following all material lines down from Anna Barbara Shoene, they would all the same mitochondrial info. Now as the info is passed from a mother to her children, there may be some small changes in the information. These are very rare as a change only occurs, on the average, every few thousand years. It appears that 95 percent of the people in Europe are descended from only seven women. See the book, "The Seven Daughters of Eve." Are the Fleshmans having a special family meeting at the Germanna Reunion next summer? -- John.Blankenbaker@comcast.net
Linda, My mother [Theodosia Belle] was a Fleshman from Greenbriar WV. I have talked to a couple of my aunts and cousins and we are planning to go to the Germanna July reunion. There are 6 or 7 of us. But, If something is planned, maybe there could be more attending. I sent Germanna an email asking for information, but haven't received an answer. John Blankenbaker sent me a nice email answering some of my questions, but we still have to plan where we are going to stay, etc. Do you know if the Fleshman Family is planning any type of reunion in WV this year? I knew Dr. Montgomery died, but don't know how to contact Richard Blake. Brenda, Linda and others: Sorry to say, since Dr. John Montgomery's passing, there has been response or interest among the remaining principals of the Fleshman Family Association in continuing the Fleshman Reunion in Lewisburg. I will once again contact the others to see if the reunion can be resurrected. I will keep you and the list posted.
