    1. Re: [GERMANNA] How Wilhites are connected to the Thomas Powell and Mary Place
    2. The Powells were in Virginia in the 1600s and Culpepper/Orange County in the mid 1700s. Thomas Powell was born in 1635 and his grandchildren and great grandchildren would have met the Germanna families as they relocated west. The Taylors, Berry's, Byrd, Burr and other prominent Virginia family members lived side by side with the Germanna families and by the time of the Revolutionary War they were well integrated. Many members also moved west with the Germanna families. I think it would be great if we had more research on how these early English and Scots Irish lines connect with Germanna families. By the Revolution many Germanna families were marrying into English and Scots Irish families. I still have not confirmed the wife's name of Daniel Broyles born 1762, son of Cyrus Broyles born 1734 (son of Hans Jacob Broyles and Maria Fleshmann) who married Mary Wilhite/hoit. I have noted that Daniel's son Cornelius indicated he was born in Virginia and Daniel who was an adult when his father moved west, may have remained in Virginia near his wife's family until 1790 when he appears in the records in Watauga Tenn. I just wish I could locate her name whether it was English or German. Daniel's children names were a mixture of English and German and Cornelius born about 1784, son of Daniel married Mary Farley in Tenn. of a prominent Amelia, Virginia family . After Cornelius, most of the female lines on my Broyles family were English and/or Scots Irish. You can see below that Honoraias Powell, grandson of Thomas Payne Powell, moved to Culpepper in the mid 1700s where his son Thomas Payne Powell was born about 1730. It would be the next generation born about 1750 and beyond where the intermarriages really occurred. It is reported that Thomas Payne Powell and brother Simon went with Washington to western Penn near Pittsburg during the French and Indian War. My Powell line is as follows according to Vangundy source, I am still confirming this information especially the information in Kentucky: Descendants of Thomas Sr. Powell 1 Thomas Sr. Powell b: Abt. 1635 in Sittingbourne Parrish, Essex Co, VA d: 20 Mar 1700/01 in Sittingbourne Parrish, Essex Co, VA Source: _www.vangundy.net/familytree/paf/pafg71.htm_ (http://www.vangundy.net/familytree/paf/pafg71.htm) .. +Mary Place b: Abt. 1648 in Lancaster Co, VA m: Abt. 1666 in Isle of Wight/Old Rappahannock Co, VA d: 15 Dec 1710 Father: Francis Place Mother: Ann Williamson ..... 2 Honerias Powell b: Abt. 1669 in 1669, Essex Co, VA, d: 1752 in Caroline Co, VA Source: an Gundy Family File _www.vangundy.net/familytree/paf/pafg71.htm_ (http://www.vangundy.net/familytree/paf/pafg71.htm) ......... +Joyce Unknown b: Abt. 1675 in Virginia m: 1693 in Old Rappahannock Co, VA. ............ 3 Honorias Powell Jr? b: 1694 in Virginia d: 1767 in Virginia ................ +Jeanette Kirtley b: Abt. 1700 in Prob Virginia m: 20 Apr ................... 4 Thomas Payne Powell? b: Abt. 1730 in Orange Culpepper Virginia d: Feb 1809 in Estill Co, KY. ....................... +Jane Ann Bush b: 1740 Father: Phillip or Thomas Bush .......................... 5 Oner R M? Daniel Broyles named his son James Madison Broyles twenty years before James Madison was president. Daniel fought in the Revolution and likely had many English friends. I would love to know where Thomas Payne Powell's homestead was located compared to Cyrus Broyles. Does anyone know??? In a message dated 1/13/2009 1:18:17 P.M. Joshua Junior married Hannah Durham and had Lucy Stapp married to John Wilhite. John Wilhite and Lucy Stapp had Tobias married to Nancy Margaret Ellis. Tobias's son Norville Stapp Willhite then married Almira Jane Willhoite, d of Reynolds W and Lucy Towles. Reynold's father was Joel Wilhoit son of Tobias W born 15 July 1708 and Catherine(?)Walke. 1. Re: [GERMANNA] How Wilhites are connected to the Thomas Powell andMary Place
    2. I would love to see more research on related families. I have been looking for Abraham Kellar for over 50 years. He was in the Shenandoah Valley and his descendants married into the Yagers, Garrs, Clores, and others in Kemtucky. Several of his sons founght in the Rev. War under George Rogers Clark and moved to Kentucky after and then to Indiana. Recently through DNA testing I found another brother/cousin(?) who went into North Carolina in the mid- 1700's and it seems like some of the 1717 crowd went there also, and then into Tennessee.. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Sperong@aol.com> To: <germanna_colonies@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2009 4:37 PM Subject: Re: [GERMANNA] How Wilhites are connected to the Thomas Powell andMary Place > The Powells were in Virginia in the 1600s and Culpepper/Orange County in > the > mid 1700s. 1. Re: [GERMANNA] Wilhites --Powell-Bellis; Thomas - O'Neal and Ellis
    2. d bellis
    3. As a steadfast "lurker", I have stored up a couple of questions that come to mind upon reading the Wilhite-Powell post which began: ------- - The Powells were in Virginia in the 1600s and Culpepper/Orange County in the mid 1700s. Thomas Powell was born in 1635 and his grandchildren and great grandchildren would have met the Germanna families as they relocated west... lived side by side with the Germanna families and by the time of the Revolutionary War they were well integrated. Many members also moved west with the Germanna families. ------------------ Question #1. In Kentucky, a grand-daughter (Elizabeth, b.1828 of Ambrose Powell (b.1761 Culpeper Co., VA d. Estill Co., KY) married William Bellis in Estill Co., KY. A Henry Bellows (Bayliss, Belles, Bellows, Bollesfeldt, etc.), with a wife named Mary, lived in the Hawksbill area and is mentioned in several deeds involving the Pence (Bentz) family. These Pences from the Pfalz moved in the 1760s from PA to the Shenandoah and married Schnell/Snell, Bibler, and Utterback, Mauck and Shaver. So question #1 - has anyone come across anyone named with a Bellis variant in and around Germanna? (The Bollesfeldt brothers from Nieuwied settled in NJ in the 1720-30s.) Question #2. Three wives of my Thomas ancestors (not including Eva Susanna Margarita Hart (!!) remain mysteries, but two have names that come up in and around the Germanna colonies = so I'm looking for "leads." 1 Michael Thomas b: Abt. 1718 .. +Eva Susanna Margarita Hart b: Abt. 1751 d: Abt. 1839 in Mouth of Holly, Lewis Co., KY ........ 2 Solomon Thomas b: Abt. 1775 in Ten Mile Creek, PA d: Bef. September 18, 1837 in Lewis Co., KY ............ +Catherine Barnhill b: Abt. 1765 d: Bef. October 15, 1852 in Lewis Co., KY ................... 3 William Thomas b: Abt. 1809 in Kentucky d: Bef. October 06, 1866 in Scotland Co., MO ....................... +Lettice M. Neal b: Abt. 1815 in Kentucky d: Bef. February 21, 1863 in Scotland Co., MO ............................. 4 Daniel Webster "Tuk" Thomas b: July 16, 1843 in Vanceburg, Lewis Co., KY +Mary Elizabeth Sparks b: August 31, 1843 in Kentucky d: March 13, 1917 in Prairieview, Phillips Co., KS The mother of Mary Elizabeth Sparks was 1 Isabella Ellis b: August 20, 1816 in Logan Co., OH or KY d: May 25, 1886 in Johnson Twp., Granger, Scotland Co., MO So the names of interest are: Neal (and var. Neel, O'Neal, Neale, etc.), Ellis and Barnhill. I realize that these marriages might not be the result of group migration, but - then again - they might be. Thanks in advance for any ideas. Diane Bellis
