One other bit of information, Henry President Wilhite must have been illiterate, because the signature on the wedding license is in the same handwriting as the person who filled out the rest of the paperwork, and there is an "x" by his name with the notation "his mark". The document you are looking at is probably a court copy written start to finish by a court clerk. Remember that there were no copy machines and the court carried a hand written copy in most instances. This person may very well have been illiterate, but you would not be able to tell by this document for the most part. Originals can be found at the courthouses however clerk transcribed copies are the norm. Note: This is in my experience and may not be yours. <<One other bit of information, Henry President Wilhite must have been illiterate, because the signature on the wedding license is in the same handwriting as the person who filled out the rest of the paperwork, and there is an "x" by his name with the notation "his mark". Thanks for your reply, I will indeed take this into consideration...however, I am curious: why would a clerk put an 'X' on a document with 'his mark' written over it if the person making the attestation were capable of signing his own name? thanks, Madelon On Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 1:34 AM, <[email protected]> wrote: > > > The document you are looking at is probably a court copy written start to > finish by a court clerk. > Remember that there were no copy machines and the court carried a hand > written copy > in most instances.
