    1. Re: [GERMANNA] Jaeger
    2. My grandfather's name was Jost HITE; but pronounced Yost. There are a variety of spellings found in the records and most all spell the name with a "J" such as Joist, Jost. I pronounced it with a "J" for a long while until I met my friend Janet JOST who put me on the right track for pronouncing the name which is YOST but spelled JOST. Janet is third generation from the homeland of Germany and the whole family still say the name YOST and spell the name JOST. Since the YEAGERs were German, and most likely held on to their German traditions even up until the early 1900s, could be an explanation for the wide variety of spellings. I am also a "double" GOCHENOUR which is a huge can of worms, since my Illinois GOCHENOUR cousins pronounce the name differently then my Virginia GOCHENOUR cousins. Honestly, I am from California and I have never met a California GOCHENOUR. So when around my back east cousins, I just try NOT to say the name so I won't be corrected! Also, in the early German signatures that I have found, my one ancestor used "I" for "J" in his English mark. I don't know the German script, as many on this list do, but I was told that there was no "J" in the German language-------------------anyhow, my two cents about how YEAGER vs JAEGER. Also, my German family used the Old High German and when I needed to find some one to transcribe a grave stone, I had a very difficult time finding someone who could do it. Chocy

    2. My name is Joanne and when I lived in Germany, my landlady called me Youan, as the German "J" is pronounced "yout." That is as close to the spelling of the sound as I can come. Joanne Yeager Thorne

    3. I am sure she thought about the name Johanna or Johann. You also wouldn't pronounce it as we do here like John but like she pronounced your name, Joanne. :) Elke -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, June 29, 2010 7:30 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GERMANNA] Jaeger My name is Joanne and when I lived in Germany, my landlady called me Youan, as the German "J" is pronounced "yout."
