    1. Re: [GERMANNA] History of Orange Co., VA on HeritageQuest
    2. Orange County was the parent county of Culpeper and Culpeper was the parent county of Madison.  Most of the Second Colony settled in present Madison County.  The Fort Germanna site is in modern Orange Colunty, across the Rapdian in modern Culpeper county is where the Second Colony were settled during their indenture to Spotswood .  Happy Thanksgiving to all!  And thank you to E.W. for frequently posting resources for us all to check out.  Cathi ----- Original Message ----- From: "EVELYN WALLACE" <hdanw@verizon.net> To: "germanna" <germanna_colonies@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 23, 2011 4:01:00 PM Subject: [GERMANNA] History of Orange Co., VA on HeritageQuest Those fortunate enough to have access to the online database HeritageQuest through your local, nearby, or State library will find a digitized version of this book: William W. Scott, A History of Orange Co, Virginia This may be the subtitle:  From its formation in 1734 (O.S.) ....... I generally find an index by clicking on one of the last pages listed. I did stumble on several Germanna names (seemingly Second Colony) on page 82.  Probably a few names are missing. On a hurried trip to the Orange County courthouse a couple of years ago and on reading the deeds index (all nicely computerized) I found LOTS of colonial family names of interest to me. I will have to look at Michael E. Doran's Atlas of Virginia County Boundary Changes [some title like that] to determine how many counties Orange Co. actually *parented*.  That poor atlas really getting battered!!! Although I wanted photocopies of a number of pages from the Orange Co. early deed index, the county clerk was suspicious of my request and conferred with her supervisor.  The tale brought back to me:  The county officials were afraid these pages would be put on the internet. (Little do they know that that event and similar events seem to taking place apace--especially when one checks almost daily the changes which are taking place on familysearch.org--not to mention Ancestry.com and also now--with the upcoming soon to be released 1940 census which Dick Eastman says will be handled by Archives.com.) Happy Thanksgiving--or its German equivalent!!!
