Poking around, I found a college course syllabus on "Germany during the Reformation" http://www.boisestate.edu/courses/reformation/germany/index.shtml It is fairly short, informal, and readable, and explains a lot about politics, religion, and their interaction that created the conditions our German ancestors had been living in for the two centuries just before they came here.
