    1. [GERMANNA] 1791 tax list and personal tax list
    2. Winifred K Miller
    3. Searching these lists for Wilhite(sic). In the Virginia Tax List(1791) there is a John, William,Michael with sons. On another page there is Tobias Wilhoit and sons. I never seem to find Matthias. Trying to figure out ages. I know my John Wilhite signed for a Tobias to marry Nancy Margaret Ellis in 1801 in Woodford County. John also signed for another son Acquilles to marry Mary Hall in Woodford County. My line comes from Tobias, Matthias, another Michael and then a cross between the two lines. Also have problems with the children of Matthias(?) and Tobias and my computer won't let me delete the ones I assigned to each. Any suggestions?

    1. Re: [GERMANNA] [GERMANS-VA] Removing Unwanted Family Members
    2. Mary Blendy
    3. Craig et al, In answer to your question about "disconnecting" unwanted family members from the tree, I have listed the procedure that I've been using. I'm sure there is a better way that I haven't discovered yet in my limited universe, but here goes: 1. On the Family Tree Page, hover your mouse over the individual's name for whom you want to change or delete family members (i.e., the father, mother, etc of "John Jones") 2. While still hovering over "John Jones", see the tabs at bottom, and click on "View Profile", which brings up the Profile Page for John Jones. 3. Under John's name, highlighted in dark gray, click on "Edit this Person." This brings up the "Vital Information Page" for John Jones. 4. Click on the "Relationships" tab under his name. You will see Father, Mother, Spouse, and Children. 5. All the way over on the right hand side of each relationship, you will see the word "Remove". NOTE: This WILL NOT remove the person from the tree, only the RELATIONSHIP to John Jones. It will allow you to add another name as Father, etc. To REMOVE THE PERSON ENTIRELY from the tree, see #7 below. 6. To enter another name for John Jones' father, click "Add Father". When you do this, a box will appear and at top of box, you will see "Select Someone Already in Your Tree - Select From List" (this allows you to see what names are already in the Family Tree without adding a duplicate of same name). The "List" screen appears, and at far right, enter last name in Search field if you know the EXACT spelling; otherwise, enter the first few letters of the last name and click SEARCH. (it's very fickle - if you search for the whole name, you must know the exact spelling of the name, the way it is entered in the Family Tree). Now you can see all the Jones' in your tree and select the correct one for John's father. Do the same for mother, children, etc. If the person is not in the List of Names, then you can add a new name on the same screen under "Create a New Person in Your Tree" (below "Select Someone Already in Your Tree - Slect From List." 7. To REMOVE THE ENTIRE PERSON from your tree: This removes the PERSON, not the members of his family, so you will need to follow the same procedure for each member of his family: a. Go to "Profile Page" for the father that you disconnected from John Jones -- you can search for his name using "Find a Person in This Tree, then click on drop-down menu "List of All People." Using the same method above under #3, click on "Edit this Person." This time, on the right hand side of the page, across from the disconnected father's name, you will see a little trash can, and "Delete 'name of person'". This REMOVES the person ENTIRELY from the tree. HINT: if you have to delete all the members of this family, I usually start with the children's names, then the spouse, and lastly the individual. Hope this makes some sort of sense. As I said, I'm sure there are other ways to do this, but it works for me. If someone finds an easier way, please let me know. Happy Searching! They get repeated with everything--and if you don't snip them, then repeated twice, and so on. As a list administrator myself, I try to remind users of this. But, I may as well be talking to the wall. Imposing byte limits on posts just creates more work for me because then they bounce to me and I have to review them, and it's just easier to pass them through and have people use up more byte space complaining about it. Call me defeated on this one. I give up. This is nothing new. As an illustration, I'm responding to your entire post just to show how it goes. Loving the ancestry.com site you put up. That was a bold move, but a good one. I haven't been that active on it lately, but just knowing it's there is a good feeling. And no, I have still not mastered it but I am sticking to things I REALLY now for sure and trying to tread slowly as I go along. I really appreciate the helpful hints you and others are sending to us. I still have not learned out how to "disconnect" marriages and children. A main thing to always do is check if a person or a source is already there. I, personally, do not need every "location" to give me the genealogy of the particular county. I use the county where the event occurred at the time that county was which. I find the location source of say, "Madison, 1793; Culpeper 1749; Orange.....etc" very annoying. So, for things I've worked on, I've just changed it to the county where the record is filed. We don't all need nursemaiding. That being said, if I see something like "married in Madison County in 1750....uh, no they weren't as that county did not exist then. I'd like to hear others thoughts on this, as I suppose we should all try to be consistent with one another. Craig

    3. Thank you for this addition to my knowledge. Wherever I find Holtzclaws, sometimes in the adjoining county, I generally find Kempers.  Some books of early marriages in Kentucky show multiple marriages of these two families.  And of course, one of the sisters of my John Frederick Kemper of Garrard Co. KY and later of Victoria Co., TX married Lytle [sp?] Smith of Garrard Co.  If my memory is not scrambled, I believe I found Smith as an immigrant to Missouri but he later returned to Garrard Co. after his wife died.  The Holtzclaw males seemingly had the knowledge of how to acquire land in both Virginia and in Kentucky (which did not become a state until 1792).  The Kempers frequently bought land from them, not being the first grantees or patentees. My advice to those who have lost their Kentucky relatives;  Look in Missouri.  Or Indiana.  Or even Illinois. Possibly the website for General Land Office--Bureau of Land Management may give a hint.  Also, I learned many years to my delight that the Missouri Historical Society has a great collection of Missouri papers--even legal newspapers, where my researcher found a very-much-needed obituary which gave good genealogical detail of the deceased wife of an attorney, who was a cousin to my great-grandfather.  And, of course, that cousin grew up in a *burned* county in Illinois!!!
