    1. [GERMANNA] A Useful Source on HeritageQuest - Culpeper Co., VA Taxables 1783
    2. EVELYN WALLACE
    3. Those subscribers who have access through their local Public Library (or a neighboring library--or a State library) to the online database called HeritageQuest will find some useful information if your Germanna ancestors (or their relatives) stayed in Virginia after the Revolution--or at least stayed in Culpeper Co.  Here is a digitized book, with many slaves with names, also listed. Norris, Mary Boldridge Property tax list of Culpeper County, Virginia:  and names of slaves, 1783 Raleigh, NC:  unknown, 1936, 29 pgs. I was pleased to see at least one Kamper (without slaves).  I wonder what generation he may have been considering this tax list was taken after the Revolution. Incidentally, you may find a widow or two, one with her taxable son.  (I don't know what age that son would have been to be taxable AFTER the Revolution.  The experts of Virginia genealogy say that prior to the Revolution, males of 16 years were eligible for the militia--and probably counted as tithables.)  Perhaps some subscriber can enlighten us. Widows, I understand, were generally exempt, and an aged male may also be exempt from taxes.  We need some enlightenment here also. E.W.Wallace If this book appears on google.books, please advise.  Then it will have a larger audience.

    1. [GERMANNA] Bomgardner land/Clore/Thomas/Hupp
    2. I added a picture of the survey of Bomgardner which Jesse Bomgarden inherited (on Michael Thomas, son of Johannes, page)-- where Michael Thomas had his plantation on this survey and which joined the land of Everhart and Margaret Thomas Hupp, the daughter of Michael. I wish I knew why Michael lived there -- if there was any relationship at all-- or what the deal was. The photo description mentions the survey of Everhart Hupp but I have not uploaded that yet. Love working in these land patents. So thankful they are online. Take care. Marilyn

    1. [GERMANNA] Germanna people in PA
    2. I hope to spend some time in PA records on my next trip to SLC. Would love to know of other Germanna families or those from Culpeper to the ten mile creek area of Pa. It takes alot of research because the land changed hands so many times. While I am looking for my Thomas, Hupp, Debolt, Christler, Smith families, I'll be glad to look for anyone else. Here is a look at the areas that were involved in the development of western PA. If you have already researched your family in this area, it would be so very helpful if you could share it with me in the hopes of connecting some of my dots. I learned yesterday that Jesse Baumgarden mentioned with Michael Thomas in that area -- was actually a Clore descendant. (Do I have that right, Cathi?) Take care. Marilyn Here is a little background on the area -- again not easy to research. Michael Thomas has events in almost every item in the history list. Does anyone else? Anyone else have any clarifying facts about this area of PA or ideas for research? Virginia Land Grants in Pennsylvania by Raymond M. Bell Southwestern Pennsylvania was claimed by both Pennsylvania and Virginiaat the time of the Revolution. Pennsylvaniabegan giving land grants in 1769. This came to an end about 1774, when thedispute with Virginiaheightened. In 1779 and 1780, Virginiagranted land certificates to settlers in the disputed territory. Nearly 830 were granted in what is now Pennsylvania. The certificates (mostly for400 acres) listed the name of the applicant, date of certificate, date ofsettlement and location (generally by name of stream). After the boundarydispute was settled Pennsylvaniaresumed land grants about 1784. Two types of grants were made: those based onVirginia Certificates, which were honored by Pennsylvaniaif there was no prior claim, and those granted directly based on Pennsylvania claims. In 1776, Virginia had set up three counties: Yohogania, north of a line drawn from Follansbee to Washington to Brownsville toUniontown: Ohio, south of Yohogania and west of a fine drawn from Washingtonslightly southwest, and Monongalia, south of Yohogania and east of Ohio [thesethree counties made up the District of West Augusta]. In granting certificates to settlers in these counties in1779 and 1780, Virginiarequired the settlers to list the bona fide date of settlement on the land. Monongahela River, which flows through the eastern part of Washington County, rises in Randolph County, Virginia,at the foot of the Laurel Mountain, and flowing northwardly for about threehundred miles, empties into the Allegheny River at Pittsburghand forms the Ohio. It is nearly four hundred yards wide at itsmouth, and is navigable for light boats sixty miles, to West Brownsville, in this county, and for small boats nearly twohundred miles from its mouth. Its principal tributaries are the Youghioghenyand Cheat rivers, which enter into it on the east side, but on the west side,in Washington County, are TENMILE CREEK, Pigeon Creek, Baker and Fish Plotruns, Pike Run, South Fork and Maple Fork, Mingo Creek.

    2. Many thanks to Verna for helping me put Rosina Garr in the right family tree -- and to Cathi Clore Frost-- for having the info online to help me untangle my puzzle. I took Rosina (who married Christler) out as a child of John Adam Garr and added her back in as his sister. This is all in my files only. I don't touch these other families on the master page -- and for good reason. <smile> Thanks for double checking my tree. Take care. Marilyn

    3. This appeared on another rootsweb list to which I subscribe.  It contains a surname for a second great-grandmother!!! This is part of the brief message: If you have been waiting for a sale from Familytreedna, they have announced a 36 hour special starting today. My own suggestion: If there is already a rootsweb list for your main surname to which you subscribe, I subscribe you contact the administrator.  Then make up your mind whether you want to spend the money. I submitted a sample for what is called autosomal DNA.  I don't understand ALL I should, but the webmistress is quite interested in the results which I also submitted with an *ahnentafel* [German for ancestor table]. With my Dad's lineage, I have many colonial Southern ancestors, many of whom, of course intermarried.  She is busy analyzing and linking my DNA with others who are already subscribers.  (Of course, it is a English/Irish/Scottish/Welsh common surname!) At my age, I thought, Why not? E.W.Wallace

    3. I am excited to make this connection -- maybe we could move the discussion to Germans-VA at Rootsweb since the Swopes/Schwabs were German. Of course you are also saying there is a significant Germanna presence in Monroe County, as well. Maybe some of the other Ellison children married Germanna people? Anyway, according to the undocumented information I collected, your James Ellison, Jr., would be the brother to my ancestress Mary Eleanor Ellison, who married Michael Swope. According to family legend, Michael Swope was a spy with Francis Marion. But unlike me, you have some documented information! I have James Ellison m. Ann English (I had the Addis name but did not know why). The children I have listed were my ancestor Mary Eleanor, b. 1755, Burlington Co., NJ, James Isaac Ellison, who must be your ancestor, John L. 2. This is great, Craig, and I'm glad that I could help! Yes, Martin Fishback donated the land for the Academy, it's on his property, behind his house in Jeffersonton. The house is huge, 4000 sq ft on 3 acres. It's located across the street from Fleetwood, then there's another Fishback house across the street from Martin's house, but I can't remember who's it is right now. And, the Harman Fishback house is located on the 229, it's called "Hebron." I will have to get Martin's War of 1812 information, too, we are compiling a database of Germanna descendants that served in that war for the Germanna Foundation. We are showing his service as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army, source being _US Army Registrar of Enlistments 1789-1903_. He served from July 1813 to June 1815--nearly the entire duration of the conflict. We also note that he donated land and buildings to the Jefferston academy. We did not have the RW service in his notes, which is surprising because the man leading this whole project is very conscientious about this, and his home chapter is the Minutemen chapter in Culpeper, and he was undoubtedly at the ceremony in 2002. In fact, our next project is already underway, and that is a similar book on burials of RW veterans in Virginia. This greatly expands the information done in 2001 known as the JLARC report (Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee). That report is on line at: http://jlarc.virginia.gov/revwar.htm ______________________________ I will leave the marriage information as it is. Again, many thanks, Craig

    2. Another reference to Peter Watts, friend of Abraham Thomas, and served in military with Holtzclaw and Thomas brothers I don't know why Peter Watts made the claim for Jacob. You could get 400 acres if you raised a crop of corn and then you also were entitled to another 1000 acres. So looks like Jacob raised his corn, claimed his 400 acres and his additional 1000 acres which he sold to Jacob Fishback -- what happened to the other 300 acres after he sold some to Jr.? Take care. 2. Suzanne Matson
    3. Marilyn, I've asked that question more than once on this list and on other lists, but have never received an answer. The only place I've seen it written is in Holtzclaw's book and no sources are provided. I am not aware of any documents associated with his statements regarding the dates of birth and death for Jacob Holtzclaw and Susannah Thomas. I, too, would like to know the source(s) for these dates. 3. Barbara, Thank you. Again, many thanks, Craig On Sep 25, 2011, at 1:04 PM, rockcatt@aol.com wrote: > > I can verify that Martin Fishback is definitely buried in the cemetery at "Fleetwood," the John Fishback home in Jeffersonton. We've visited Fleetwood a couple of times during the First Colony Tour for the Germanna Foundation and the cemetery there. It is said that Martin was born and died in the same room in Fleetwood, but he did have his own home, it's located across the street from Fleetwood, in Jeffersonton. I was just speaking with the current owners of his home a few weeks ago! There are 4 Fishback homes in Jeffersonton and the Coontz home is also still standing, and occupied, in Jeffersonton. > > The Culpeper Minutemen Sons of the American Revolution held a dedication ceremony at Fleetwood in 2002 to honor the Rev War service of Martin Fishback, he was a Private and fought in the Battle of Yorktown. I don't know about service in the War of 1812, he was born in 1763 and he died in 1842, so it's possible, but I've seen no record for this service. > > The marriage of Lucy Amiss and Martin Fishback is noted in "Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans, John Roster in the biography of William Meade Fishback, Governor of Arkansas.
