Several Berry/Berrey researchers have discovered there are conflicting dates on the John Berry will. Is anyone close to Richmond who can copy their Microfilm version and send it to us ???. FHL's goes off the page and we are far away from Virginia. Interlibrary loan has not been able to get it from State Library of VA either.. I will reimburse any expenses. Thanks Barbara Berrey Stotler or just Barb
I feel really dumb but what is Germanna-bounces? Am I missing a website or mail list? On Sun, Nov 6, 2011 at 12:34 PM, <barberrey@comcast.net> wrote: > > > > Miss comments on Germanna_Bounces. Does anyone have the name of a local historian/professional researcher/genealogist in the Schwaigern area whom I could hire to do some research for me? You can contact me privately if you prefer. Jill Farinelli
It has been a while since I posted this information; but maybe someone has more to contribute to our family mystery. Back in the 1980s, Awilda KACKLEY presented to me some old family records that had been handed down to her concerning her family lineage. She left them with me for several months before I returned them to her. (Before computer family research) Since then, they have gone missing, so I have no record of proof as it concerned them; however, I have since done my own research. My step-daughter, only grand child of above Awilda KACKLEY, has a direct line to Jacob KACKLEY, born about 1702 in Steinhelm, Wurenberg, Germany. Jacob KACKELY died in 1788, Shenandoah County, Virginia. As far as Jacob goes, I have all my ducks in a row as to documents and so forth. Now the hard part, no proof. He was married to Alice SPIELMANN (1717-1805) said to be a daughter of Johannes "John" SPIELMANN and his wife Mary Catharine FISHBACH. I believe the last time I posted on this was sometime in 2009; perhaps someone else has found some references to Alice SPIELMANN. Often times when we change our minds it is due to learning new information. That is what I appreciate as I eaves drop on this site. I learn new data. My husband was a Martin, etc. descendant. I am still looking for a connection from the Bender in N.C. to the Germanna group. Someday, hopefully! Cary, As you suggest, spin off groups are easy to do, and this not a big surprise. There are some hard feelings. I wish it wasn't so. There are many misunderstandings . That Marc called me and explained his side of things meant a lot to me. I served six years in the Missouri Legislature. I bring this up to only say I learned how to say "I was wrong" many times. I am the first to say I am sorry. Too often, people get stuck in the "I am right!" mode of thinking. The best thing I ever learned was to say "I've changed my mind." To put this in perspective, I'll never forget a remark by a political operative in St. Louis who, when confronted with a contradiction of her own making, said "Since when did I lose the right to change my mind?" And that is what we often do in genealogy. Always good to hear from you, Cary Craig Kilby On Oct 31, 2011, at 12:21 PM, Cary Anderson wrote: > Thanks Craig for posting your interaction with Marc. Barbara and all, Like with some other families (i.e. Ballenger, Thomas) we have to be careful not to confuse these surnames like Spillman from the English people and the Germanna people. Spillman (various spellings) are a good example Last week I was at the Library of Virginia looking at loose (unrecorded) wills. One was for Hannah (Ball) Fox, widow of David-2 Fox dated 31 OCT 1708. Long before any Germanna people arrived on these shores. She names her daughter Hannah Spelman (widow of Clement Spelman, first husband was Rodham Kenner...it gets confusing) I often wonder who knew whom in this period of time. In the U.S and International Marriage Records 1560-1900 Joel is married to Mary Wilhoit. His birth year is listed 1756, I have him born around 1743. In Tobias married to Catherine(maybe Walk) I have Michael, Conrad, Catherine, Mary, Jesse, William without mention of Joel, 1743 John 1745 and Lewis 1747. I have mixed up the children of Tobias and Mathias married to Mary Ballenger. Mathias just disappears when he and some family go to the Carolina's.

Thanks Craig for posting your interaction with Marc. A phone conversation is still the best to face to face for communication. I feel much better about the situation. The little spin off groups are easy to form in this day of instance communication. I still prefer face-to-face, and if not possible, phone conversation, the old fashion way. Now onward re our historical & genealogical research putting history together the way each of us see it. Anyhow, Thanks again Craig. Cary
Dear Germanna descendants, No doubt, many subscribers subscribe to Dick Eastman's almost-daily newsletter, who keeps up up-to-date on genealogical happenings. He frequently notifies us of new occurrences on the Familysearch.org website and associated websites--such as the FHL wiki. Anyway, I just returned recently from a week's research trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and when I began to use the online FHL Library catalog (I prefer the Classic version to the new dumbed-down newer catalog) I was astounded to find many records have been digitized--even some of the previously suppressed pre-1837 English parish records where I found a few *usual suspects* related to my English maternal grandmother. As I was seeking some early probate records of Henderson Co., KY (paternal great-grandfather, whose second wife was a Kemper, I was astounded to learn that many of these records (alas, not early ones) have been digitized, and you can sit at your computer and read these records. There is a whole new printing system since my visit last year. Highly computerized--but not infallible, we learned!!! I suggest you jot down some of your *imponderables*, think up some search terms, and see what you can find on the Family History Library Catalog besides lists of books and films. What kinds of records do you wish would fall in your lap--at home? Maybe not this week, however. For example, just as I typed the above, I wondered whether there might be at least a familysearch.wiki on the First and the Second Germanna colonies in Virginia. Hmm--something for you and me to explore!!! And notify the rest of us!!! There has been a bit of back-and-forthing on this rootsweb.com about Weaver aka Wever family members. Relying on one of my several books of Fauquier Co., VA I find this in a court record: [Fauquier Col, VA] May court 1780 [22 May] O. [ordered] that Tilman Wever, John Wever, John Herndon and John Ashby,or any 3 of them, first being sworn, appraise the estate of Augustine Smith, dec'd. (John K. Gott, Fauquier County Virginia Court Records 1776-1782 [Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, 1993] p. 104.) Heritage Books is now in Westminster, MD. There is a website, and also a free catalog with a multitude of books. I see I need to order some more books regarding colonial Fauquier Co. (before my remaining Kempers moved to Kentucky, where they bought land from their cousins, the Holtzclaws!!!!) Oh, yes, Iberian Publishing Co.--now New Papyrus Publishing--of Athens GA --has other other books concerning Fauquier Families such as a supplement by John P. Alcock. Hmm! In the Fauquier Co. quotation above, I wonder if the John Ashby listed in 1780 COB, Fauquier Co. might be the same person who was commander of the 2nd Virginia Rangers in 1755 (French and Indian War). This information about enlists in the 2nd Virginia Rangers comes from Lloyd D. Bockstruck's Virginia's Colonial Soldiers [Baltimore: Genealogical Publ. Co., 1988], p. 53] One of Ashby's soldiers/enlistees was one Jesse Oldham, , 7 Sept, 5' '8'", dark [complection, 21 [age], Virginia, carpenter. (Jesse was not a Germanna descendant, but he next appears in the literature (as I know it) some years later was in colonial Orange Co. NC where he married a bride whose parents were from Fairfax Co., VA (Richard Simpson and Mary Kincheloe, were his in-laws). He stayed in North Carolina until after the Revolution when he relocated to Kentucky--near Boonesborough in Madison Co., KY. Any information about Jesse Oldham accepted. A whole bunch of Oldhams show up on the early tax lists of Caswell Co. NC. E.W.Wallace "
There is also the book by John Wesley Garr and John Calhoun Garr, " Genealogy of the Descendants of John Gar, or more Particularly his son Andreas Gaar who emigrated from Bavaria to America in 1732". It brings the generations down, and is pretty reliable on most things, I've heard. I have the CD John mentioned, it is helpful not just for the genealogy information, but it has a lot of general info about a lot of things that is very interesting.
